The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Anurag Thakur on Thursday has clarified that the much disputed World T20 clash between India and Pakistan in Dharamsala is on schedule in spite of the fact that the Himachal Pradesh government had expressed its inability to provide security for the match. Thakur said he has met the chief minister and the talks have been progressive.

The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh, reportedly told the BCCI Secretary to sort out the matter with the families of martyrs and ex-servicemen in Kangra, who are up in arms against the March 19 match and consider it as an “insult” to the martyrs who lost their lives in Pathankot airbase attack.

“As far as BCCI is concerned, the India vs Pakistan match is on schedule in Dharamsala,” Thakur said in a press conference here on Thursday.

“As far as 19th March is concerned, I have met HP chief minister and the talks were very progressive. BCCI and the government want to resolve this situation. We respect the war veterans and martyrs equally,” he said.

“Himachal Pradesh government will speak to the people who have raised concerns over the India vs Pakistan match in Dharamsala,” he added.

The Himachal Pradesh Congress had earlier asked the BCCI to either cancel the proposed match or shift the venue as hosting Pakistan would hurt the sentiments of the families. The party claimed that Kangra is home to a large number of soldiers, including Kargil War heroes like Captain Vikram Batra and Captain Saurabh Kalia.

The BCCI secretary said while the board condemns acts of terror such as the attack on Pathankot air base but sports can’t be mixed with politics.

“BCCI condemns attacks like Pathankot but we can’t mix sports with politics,” he said.

Thakur also clarified that the BCCI has not fixed any alternate venues for the mega clash.

“No venues have been put on standby as of now as far as the India-Pakistan World T20 match is concerned,” Thakur said.
