Chahar who was last seen in action during India’s three-match ODI series against West Indies at home in December last year was ruled out of the final fixture of that series due to lower back injury and was replaced by Navdeep Saini. While Saini has retained his spot for the upcoming ODIs against South Africa, Chahar is yet to make his comeback.

Saini has been a regular fixture in the Indian limited-overs set up since the start of the year, having featured in the T20Is against Sri Lanka, ODIs against Australia apart from being a part of the T20I, ODI as well as the Test squads against New Zealand. The 27-year-old Delhi pacer has been exceptional in the limited-overs opportunities he has got so far.

Given the conditions in New Zealand, a fully-fit Deepak Chahar would have been a valuable addition given his ability to swing the ball irrespective of the format. A bright prospect for the 2020 T20 World Cup, the Chennai Super Kings pacer deserved a spot in the ODI squad against Quinton de Kock’s men before joining the Men in Yellow for 2020 IPL.
