After a disastrous World Cup campaign, South Africa would now like to move forward and focus on the rebuilding process. Their first assignment after the tournament would be an away tour against India. It will be a huge talent for the Proteas since their batsman often look clueless when the ball spins. The subcontinent pitches offer turn and don’t suit their interests.

South Africa will be playing a three-match T20I series (15-22 September), followed by a three-match Test series (October). The Test series would be a part of the Test Championship and will mark a beginning to South Africa’s campaign in the tournament. The team will again return back in March 2020, where they will lock horns with then men-in-blue in a three-match ODI series. However, the hosts would start as a favorite in each of these series.

In order to prepare for the tour, the Cricket South Africa (CSA) has decided to send a group early to India, to get accustomed to the conditions. The group includes some renowned faces in Aiden Markram, Zubayr Hamza, and Temba Bavuma. Young faces Janneman Malan, Pieter Malan, Sinethemba Qeshile, Edward Moore and Matthew Breetzke will also be part of the camp in India.

A group of seven spinners has been sent to prepare them, with Dane Piedt, Bjorn Fortuin, Tsepo Ndwandwa, and Senuran Muthusamy being some of them. The group would be supervised by Russell Domingo and ex-players Paul Adams and Ashwell Prince. Prince will supervise the batting while former chinaman bowler Adams will be the bowling coach.

Eyes on the future

“We have identified Aiden Markram, Zubayr Hamza, and Temba Bavuma as key Proteas batsmen to benefit from this project and we have also included some of our potential stars of the future such as Janneman Malan and Sinethemba Qeshile, who have already both played for the Proteas, as well as Matthew Breetzke,” said CSA Chief Executive Thabang Moroe in a media release. These 5 players are the future of the South African cricket, and a lot is expected from these players.

Moroe said that Pieter Malan and Edward have been the two of their most consistent run-scorers in franchise cricket, therefore justifying their inclusion in the camp. He also said that his sole ambition to send these players to the camp is not only the upcoming series but the 2023 World Cup as well since it will be played in India.

Clearly, the South African board wants to learn from mistakes and doesn’t want to leave any stone unturned to get ready for the next World Cup. The last time South Africa toured India, they were thrashed 3-0 in the 4-match Test series. Therefore, it would be interesting to see if this camp helps them in turning their fortunes around.
