Team India finished things in style after a convincing win over Sri Lanka in the final game of the 3-match T20I series. After two dominating wins in the series, the action moved to Mumbai for the India vs Sri Lanka encounter. The depleted Indian side entered the contest as the favorites yet the visitors could not be ruled out.
Amidst this backdrop, the match went underway. Against all expectations, the match ended up being a low scoring affair. However, the final result was the one that all expected. Team India sealed the match with 5 wickets in hand. With the win, they completed their second T20I whitewash against the Sri Lankans in the last 3 months.
Coming to the game, team India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first. Washington Sundar made his debut for the Indian side, and also Mohammad Siraj found a place in the side. Sri Lanka, after having been asked to bat first, could only muster 135 runs on the board. In response, India had a jittery response, yet managed to scale past the target owing to the 30s from Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey.
Here are the India Player Ratings for the India vs Sri Lanka 3rd T20I:
Rohit Sharma – 4/10
Team India skipper Rohit Sharma started off on a brisk note in this game. He seems to be in love with the India vs Sri Lanka affairs. He hit four boundaries and a six during his knock of 27 that came off 20 deliveries. The way he had started, it seemed that another big one was in store. However, his stay was cut short right after the powerplay by Dasun Shanaka.
KL Rahul – 2/10
KL Rahul was one of the star performers of the previous game. Rahul failed to replicate his heroics from the previous game. He looked struggling on the Mumbai pitch that was pretty unusual on the day. He eventually perished on 4 that came off 9 balls. Dushmantha Chameera accounted for his dismissal.
Shreyas Iyer – 6/10
Shreyas Iyer has had a mixed bag of a series thus far in the Indian colors. In some games, this Mumbai batsman has shown pure class and then in a few games, he has struggled to get his act together. In this particular game, he had the opportunity to bat in front of his home crowd. However, he could not play the brisk knock that he would have ideally wanted to. He ended up getting run out on a hard fought 30 off 32 balls.
Manish Pandey – 7/10
While Shreyas Iyer played an uncharacteristic knock in the game, Manish Pandey tried his best to get his act together in his normal mode. Manish looked in good form with the bat as he mustered 32 runs during his stay at the crease that lasted 29 balls. He ensured that the Indian team was well in control of the game by the time he had finished his innings.
Hardik Pandya – 5.5/10
Almost all Indian cricketers have had their share of fun in the Sri Lankan assignment this season. However, all-rounder Hardik Pandya has failed to get his act together with the bat. Hardik was promoted up the order in the game ahead of MS Dhoni in the game in a bid to get some runs under his belt before he leaves for the South Africa series. But unfortunately, Hardik ended up getting dismissed cheaply yet again. Earlier in the game, he managed to scalp 2/25 in the four overs that he bowled.
Dinesh Karthik – 6.5/10
Dinesh Karthik has been very unfortunate in this series. Karthik has been sitting in the dressing room after being padded up. But his opportunities with the bat have been scarce. Dinesh Karthik got a chance to bat in this game though. He scored an unbeaten 18 off 12 balls and hit a crucial six in the penultimate over to ease out all the pressure.
MS Dhoni – 6/10
MS Dhoni has been in a fine form this season. In this India vs Sri Lanka series in particular, Dhoni has been showing great maturity with the bat. Even in this game, he was at the crease till the final delivery of the game. He hit the winning shot to seal the match for the Indian team. He remained unbeaten on 16 off 10 balls with 2 fours to his name. Surprisingly, he had no dismissals to his name as with the gloves today.
Washington Sundar – 8/10
Young Washington Sundar became the youngest player to play a T20I for the Indian team. He had a fine start to his international career in the shortest format. Sundar bowled with the new ball and bowled the very first over of the match.
Considering the fact that he bowled in the powerplay, Sundar managed to be very impressive as he conceded less than 6 runs per over. He also dismissed Kusal Perera, the hero for the islanders of the previous game, for just 4. Sundar finished with figures of 1/22 in his quota of 4 overs.
Kuldeep Yadav – 5/10
Kuldeep Yadav continued his good form with the ball. He bowled economically well. Albeit he did not have Yuzvendra Chahal to bowl in tandem on the day, he managed to keep the run flow in control. In the four overs that he bowled, he gave away just 26 runs. Also, he accounted for the dismissal of Danushka Gunathilaka.
Mohammad Siraj – 3/20
Owing to the fact that the Indian team had already won the series, they decided to give a chance to their bench strength. Among the two beneficiaries in the match was pacer Mohammad Siraj. Siraj, however, had a forgettable time with the ball. Albeit he managed to take the wicket of the Sri Lankan captain Thisara Perera, Siraj was very expensive with the ball. He gave away 45 runs in his four overs.
Jaydev Unadkat – 9/10
Jaydev Unadkat emerged as one of the biggest positives in the series for the hosts. As coach Ravi Shastri rightly admitted after the match, Unadkat is a fine prospect of fast bowling. He has a lot of variations in his armory. Unadkat was the pick of the Indian bowlers in the match. He returned with figures of 2/15 in his quota of 4 overs. He accounted for the wickets of both the Sri Lankan openers, Niroshan Dickwella and Upul Tharanga.
