After annihilating West Indies in the recently-concluded T20I series, the Men in Blue are expected to continue their winning spree in One-day Internationals while eyeing the 2023 World Cup. Virat Kohli and his troops swept the T20I series due to several individual performances. KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli emerged as vital cogs of the Indian side after delivering formidable performances with their bat.

Skipper Kohli led his team from the front as he amassed 183 runs in the series including two unbeaten knocks of 70 and 94. He was also awarded ‘Player of the Series’ for his stellar performance. All eyes were on the 31-year-old right-hander, who was expected to carry his prolific form in the first ODI against West Indies at Chepauk. Considering his impressive record at Chepauk, Kohli was touted to deliver a match-winning performance in the ODI series opener.

However, the Indian skipper’s run-scoring spree was hampered by a rare failure as he was dismissed by Sheldon Cottrell on the score of 4 runs. Looking to steer the ball towards the third man, Kohli was trapped by the slower ball as it went off the inside edge to topple his leg stump. The crowd in Chennai was stunned and silent by witnessing a rare failure of the in-form Indian captain. Kohli, who had smashed six tons in his last nine innings against West Indies, was anticipated to add another ton his illustrious ODI career.

India suffered two major blows as they lost the precious wickets of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli in the powerplay itself. Sheldon Cottrell has emerged as the top-performer for the visitors as the pacer bolstered his side by providing two early breakthroughs.

Meanwhile, Twitter erupted after Kohli’s uncommon failure as he has been in sublime form in 2019. He already has scripted a plethora of records across all formats of the game. While donning the Indian jersey in 240 ODIs, he has amassed 11524 runs at an astounding average of 60.21.

Kohli would be looking to better his records in the remaining ODIs in the series as the Men in Blue have never lost a bilateral ODI series to West Indies since 2006. The Delhi-born batsman currently leads the charts of top-scorers this year.
