India and Windies are set to lock horns in the first of the five-match ODI series in Guwahati on Sunday. The venue will also make its debut in the 50-overs format having hosted a T20I last year which India lost. Meanwhile, the BCCI has announced the 12-man squad for the series opener continuing the norm started during the Test series. Rishabh Pant is set to make his ODI debut at number five as Manish Pandey has been left out.

Virat Kohli will return to bat at number three while Ambati Rayudu will slot one position down to the much-debated number four. There will be a toss-up between Mohammed Shami and Khaleel Ahmed for the second pacer it seems as Umesh Yadav will surely play after his exploits in the Test series. India will definitely play three spinners in Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

Who is likely to sit out?

Mohammed Shami is back in the reckoning for the ODIs with the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah rested. While Umesh will lead the pace attack it will be interesting to see if Khaleel gets a nod. He did well in a couple of opportunities in the Asia Cup. Even the chief selector MSK Prasad has spoken highly of him and is looking at him as the potential World Cup candidate.

This series also gives a great chance to Jadeja to cement his place in the side in Hardik Pandya‘s absence who is recovering from his back injury. The performance in this series will determine if he will travel Down Under with the team for the T20Is and ODIs.

Manish Pandey is unlucky to be ignored after showing excellent form while playing in the quadrangular series for India B. In a solitary in the Asia Cup, he couldn’t impress but managed to retain his place in the squad and will get his opportunities later in the series.

India’s 12-man squad for the first ODI: Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli (C), Ambati Rayudu, Rishabh Pant, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Khaleel Ahmed
