As the Windies get ready to face off against India in the ODI and T20I series, the Cricket West Indies has made a big announcement regarding selection. The board has finalized its squads for the two series, but surprisingly, there are two big names who will not feature in any of the limited-overs encounters against India.

Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo have not been included in the Windies limited-overs squads, not because of injury, but due to different internal reasons. Gayle had made himself unavailable for selection in any case, but Bravo will not be boarding a flight to India for either series as he is yet to deliver more performances to make it to the national side again. According to reports, Chris Gayle was not in contention for selection as he had signed up for the Afghanistan Premier League.

Will Chris Gayle play the World Cup next year?

The left-handed Windies batsman recently announced his retirement from List A cricket for Jamaica but he remains available for selection for the national squad ahead of the World Cup, which is to be played in England next year. A veteran of 284 ODIs and 103 Tests, Gayle was a part of the Windies team for World Cup qualifiers and is likely to feature in next year’s mega-event.

Meanwhile, Darren Bravo and Kieron Pollard have been called back to the national side for the shortest format. Both players put in noticeable performances in the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League. Darren Bravo however has been out of  international cricket for close to two years now.

“With the 2020 ICC World T20 two years away and the limited amount of T20 Internationals within the next year, the panel believes at this juncture it is time to invest in the young players that have emerged over the last two years from Windies A and B teams, along with 2018 CPL,” Courtney Browne, Chairman of the national selection panel, said as quoted by Times Now.

Jason Holder has been given captaincy duties for the five-match ODI series, while Carlos Brathwaite will be at the helm for the Windies during the T20Is.

Windies squads:

ODI: Jason Holder (c), Fabian Allen, Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Ashley Nurse, Keemo Paul, Rovman Powell, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Oshane Thomas
