Chennai will start their 2021 campaign of the IPL with a match against Delhi, who had finished as the runners-up in the previous edition. Rishabh Pant will be leading Delhi for the first time in his career and it will be interesting to see how well the youngster handles the role of captaincy. Shreyas Iyer’s injury so far doesn’t seem like something that could challenge Delhi’s chances to win this title, but it will require the team to gel well in the first match to overcome the loss of their skipper. 

Chennai, on the other hand, would have the luxury of having their star batsman Suresh Raina back in the squad for this season, after he missed the 2020 edition in the UAE. They have also added some new faces to their squad like Robbie Uthappa, Moeen Ali, and Krishnappa Gowtham, who will boost their already strong and solid unit. Ravindra Jadeja’s recovery from injury at the right time also boosts their options, in terms of skills and experience. 

Overall, both the teams are quite strong. The addition of Steve Smith could also nullify the absence of Iyer in the Delhi team while Chennai looks like a good side for the conditions in which their matches will be played. The match is being played at the Wankhede, which ensures a good scoring clash on the cards.

Rishabh Pant (Delhi)

Rishabh Pant has been scoring for fun ever since he has come back into the Indian team. He was in terrific form in Test cricket which he carried into the T20I and ODI series against England. He scored two brisk fifties during the ODI series and was seen timing the ball quite sweetly. His overall IPL record is also breathtaking, as his strike rate is 151 and average is 35.23.
