The India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar series was one of the most viewed Test series of all time. It created a buzz right from the build-up to the series until its end. While most Indian veterans completely wrote-off Australia from the 4 match series, considering India unbeatable in the subcontinent, the series was an intense and interesting contest, where Australia never felt out of the competition. This is what made India’s series win even sweeter, for it came against a rivaling team that left no stone unturned to win games.
Perhaps this is why the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Monday decided in a meeting that the members of the Indian cricket team, who were slated to receive Rs 50 lakh for regaining the trophy, would be instead paid 1 crore.
“The BCCI SGM today passed a unanimous resolution that players who were a part of Australia series win should get double the incentive. Hence they will now be paid Rs 1 crore instead of Rs 50 lakh,” an official revealed after the meeting was over.
BCCI is considered as one of the richest cricket boards in the world and thus this decision does not come as a surprise. And the Indian cricketers deserve Rs 1 crore for their fighting spirit against Australia, a side whose media constantly tried to distract Kohli and men’s attention from the game.
The series was in news for the off-field controversies which constantly surrounded throughout the series, especially those between rival captains Steve Smith and Virat Kohli. However, the friendship seems to have revived as all of the cricketers are facing off against each other in the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League, sharing same dressing rooms and playing for the same teams. No untoward incidents between any Australian and Indian player have been reported as yet.
