Shortly after the completion of the 1st ODI at Auckland, Cricket Australia released a statement regarding an injury to James Faulkner. The latter injured his right hamstring during the New Zealand batting innings thus ruling him out of the following two ODIs of the Chappel-Hadlee Trophy.
Although it is a massive blow, the Australian selectors have seemingly found a suitable replacement for James Faulkner in Marcus Stoinis. The Victorian was on the losing side in the Big Bash final as the Sydney Thunder overcame the Melbourne Stars in the BBL final.
Ales Kountouris, Cricket Australia’s Sports Science and Sports Medicine Manager’s statement read, “ James reported increased stiffness in his right hamstring during the first innings tonight and found it difficult running during our batting innings.”
“Unfortunately, with the short turnaround between games we do not believe he will recover in time to take any further part in the series. As a result, he will return to Melbourne tomorrow to have scans and start rehabilitation.”
“We are hopeful this is only a low-grade injury but will know more in the coming days.”
Chief selector Rod Marsh showed faith in Faulkner’s replacement Marcus Stoinis. His statement read, “It’s unfortunate that James has suffered this injury but the situation presents another good opportunity for Marcus Stoinis.”
“He is a promising young all-rounder who had a taste of international cricket last winter in England, and hopefully, this call-up will continue with his development.”
Marcus Stoinis will be relieved of his duties in the on-going Victoria Shield match against Tasmania which is currently taking place in the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
