The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently announced the 16-man Test squad for the tour of Ireland and England. Surprisingly, the squad had 5 players who are yet to make their debut for Pakistan but what was even more surprising was the exclusion of 32-year-old left-handed batter Fawad Alam. He had been scoring tons of runs in the domestic circuit of Pakistan but has been constantly overlooked by the selectors headed by former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq.

The exclusion of Alam didn’t go down well with the Pakistan fans as they showed their displeasure on social media over his exclusion. Notably, Imam ul Haq, the nephew of Inzamam has been named in the squad. However, the former Pakistani skipper has hit out at the people critical about his exclusion.

The unanimous decision on Saad Ali’s selection: Haq

He was speaking to ESPNcricinfo where he said that while Fawad Alam is a good player but there have been better players than him who are being selected. “Fawad is an outstanding player but in the last three years there are others at the top of the list,” Inzamam told ESPNcricinfo.

Inzamam said that they brought Alam in the nets but Saad Ali performed better than him. He said that all the coaching staff and members selected Ali over Alam. “We got him here in the nets but we found Saad Ali to be better and the decision to prefer Saad was unanimous, with input from all the coaching staff and captain,” said Haq.

Fawad should’ve got chance earlier

Interestingly, Haq thought that Fawad should’ve been selected way before because during that time his average was amazing. According to Inzamam, in his ongoing tenure as a selector, he has seen better players than Fawad Alam. ”I am not sure why Fawad wasn’t picked in the past before me but if you ask me about my tenure as chief selector, I have seen better players,” he added.

However, fans are yet to get over the fact that Alam who has been performing exceptionally well in the domestic matches has been yet again ignored by the selectors.
