The Kolkata Knight Riders were one of the favorites to win the title in the 2017 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Skipper Gautam Gambhir had been a top performer for his team in the lead up to the Qualifier 2 of the season. It was in the Qualifier 2 of the season, that saw the rollicking run of the Kolkata Knight Riders come to an end. They were beaten by the Mumbai Indians in the fixture.
It was an utterly disappointing situation for the KKR camp as all their batsmen failed to click on the very same day. It was perhaps one of those days when nothing seemed to have gone their way – from the toss to the end result. Coming into the game, they were riding sky high with their thrilling win over the defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.
It was a gritty knock from skipper Gautam Gambhir that had seen KKR topple the Sunrisers in the game. In the Qualifier 2, Gambhir lost the toss and was asked to bat first. None of the KKR batsmen showed application on the day as they ended up bundling out for a paltry 107. The Mumbai Indians, in their run chase, were firm with their approach. They eventually ended up winning by 6 wickets to knock out KKR out of IPL 10.
Acknowledging the support
After the game, Gautam Gambhir took to micro-blogging site Twitter and apologized to the KKR fans for not having won the tournament. He thanked them for the support that they showed. Also, he noted that the team tried their best in their efforts but could not overhaul the other teams.
He tweeted, “Tks for being a wonderful support 4 @KKRiders,but 4 u all this journey won’t have been fun. Tried our best may b our best wasn’t good enuff.”
