In the 14th match of the IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 17 runs. The match started off with David Warner winning the toss and elected to field first. The KKR team could not replicate their exploits in the previous match as Narine and Orange Cap holder Gautam Gambhir were dismissed cheaply. Manish Pandey and Mr. consistent for KKR Robin Uthappa steadied the ship for the Knight Riders with an essential 77 run partnership.

Manish Pandey’s 46 came at a strike rate of 131.42 while Robin Uthappa top-scored in the KKR’s inning with 68 which came off 39 balls. His innings was laced with five boundaries and four maximums. With the help of a late flourish from Yusuf Pathan, who scored an unbeaten 15-ball 21. Kolkata Knight Riders posted a competitive total of 172 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Purple Cap holder Bhuvneshwar Kumar impressed yet again at the death as well as with the new ball as he claimed 3 wickets by giving away only 20 runs in his four overs at an exceptional economy of 5 runs per over.

With their eyes set on top of the table, Dhawan and Warner gave a brisk start to the proceeding with their 46-run stand. But a flurry of wickets did not help their cause as batsmen kept giving their wicket away after getting starts. All the KKR bowlers chipped in with important wickets at regular intervals. Chris Woakes stood out for the KKR by taking 2 wickets. Yuvraj Singh looked fluent as ever, by playing some of the most audacious shots to treat the Kolkata crowd. In the end, it was a clinical performance from the KKR unit as Sunrisers fell short of the required target by 17 runs. Robin Uthappa was adjudged as the man of the match for his brilliant knock with the bat.

Robin Uthappa

Man of the match, Robin Uthappa accepted that it had taken a lot of time to be accustomed to his new technique. He also claimed that he has been in a good nick and never has felt better before. The Karnataka batsman hopes that he delivers with the bat every time he comes out with the bat and sustains his good form in the upcoming matches.

I have been hitting the ball really well. Finally after years of hardwork, I feel settled with my new technique and really feeling comfortable. I had a complete overhaul that I had done few years ago and I feel myself now. The team needs me there and I think it’s an important position to bat there (at number 3) and I’m glad I’m delivering for my team. I’m batting well and growing from strength to strength. Hopefully it will be a very good year for me.

Gautam Gambhir

The Orange Cap holder went on to state that it does not matter for a good side whether they chase or defend. Gambhir commended the efforts of the spinner, especially Narine and Kuldeep, which helped the KKR side stem the flow of runs. With this win, Gambhir hopes that other sides will view them as a side who can defend totals as well and not just a good chasing side.

Quality side would try and win in any situation whether it is bowling first or batting first. We were a good chasing side, but a win like this gives us so much confidence. We thought that it was the same wicket and it started gripping as well. Had it been a wicket which didn’t grip I wouldn’t have said that 170 is a par total. After we saw Rashid bowl, we knew that spinners would be effective and 170 was always going to be tough. If you want to do really well in a tournament, we have to click as a team and keep getting those points as well. If we can bowl well in the first six overs, we know that we can build pressure with 2 quality spinners. It is always a luxury when you have spinners like Kuldeep and Narine. Robbie, Manish and Yusuf have been hitting really well and we need to continue the momentum. Lot of people regard us as a chasing side and I think we can take a lot of confidence especially after this win. Looking for the Delhi game, it’s a day game again and hopefully we will do well.

KKR travel all the way north to Delhi to face the Daredevils on Monday, while Sunrisers would look to gain two important points against KXIP at their home ground.
