Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad showed their mettle and displayed a fascinating brand of cricket as they defeated two-time champions and table toppers Kolkata Knight Riders by 48 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Captain David Warner led the way with an insane innings as he smashed the Kolkata bowlers all round the park. His 126 came in a mere 59 deliveries which contained 10 fours and 8 gigantic sixes.
The target of 210 was always going to be a tough ask for KKR but they were in the hunt until Robin Uthappa was there in the crease, After his departure, the scales totally tilted in favour of the hosts as KKR failed to unleash the big shots. Itt was a monumental effort by the defending champions and they will be overjoyed with their all round effort.
That said here we have a look at the 5 game-changing moments of the game
David Warner’s majestic innings
Captain David Warner treated the Hyderabad crowd with some scintillating display of stroke making as the southpaw smashed the KKR bowlers all round the park. He was in a boundary hitting mode from the outset and raced to his fifty in just 25 deliveries. He looked in complete command and the KKR bowlers were left clueless in front of him.
He reached his century in the 11th over and brought out his customary celebration. It was a great knock and he wasn’t done yet. He kept on depositing them to nooks and corners of the ground until he fell in 17th over of Chris Woakes. The KKR players went up and lauded the champion batsman for his monumental effort
Kolkata bowlers left clueless
It was perhaps the first time in the tournament that KKR received a taste of their own medicine as David Warner literally toyed with and made light work of the variety in their pace attack. All the bowlers got stick and not even Umesh Yadav was spared. They were unable to get the wickets but stemmed the run flow to a certain extent in the death overs.
When Warner was going great guns it looked even 250 was a possibility but after his dismissal, it was impressive bowling by the KKR bowlers which restricted them to 209.
Robin Uthappa’s valiant effort goes in vain
The Karnataka lad continued his rich vein of form in the tournament and scored yet another half-century. Till he was there, KKR had reasonable chances of chasing the total down but after he went back it was a road too far for the two-time champions. He struck some exceptional shots and his short arm pull of Mohammad Siraj was something out of the ordinary.
His innings of 53 came in just 28 balls which 4 contained 4 fours and 4 hits over the fence. It was tremendous strokeplay by the veteran but couldn’t quite carry on. He was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj as he miscued a way outside the off stump delivery to David Warner in the deep.
Siddharth Kaul continues his merry way
He has been simply brilliant in this season and his captain David Warner has entrusted him with responsibilities and he has lived up to it. He has bowled some exceptional toe crushing Yorkers which has made stroke-making extremely hard against his bowling. He was quite exceptional today as well and executed his Yorkers and slower balls to perfection.
He bagged the important wicket of KKR captain Gautam Gambhir in the power play and then added another to his kitty with the wicket of Colin de Grandhomme in the final over. He eventually finished with impressive figures of 2/26 in 4 his allotted 4 overs.
Mohammed Siraj’s impressive spell
Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was brilliant with his pace and consistently troubled the KKR batsman. He was smashed for a tremendous six by Uthappa but apart from that, he was pretty much bowling in his areas. He bowled the short of length delivery to perfection and got good support from the pitch which had some zip on offer.
He began with the wicket of Sunil Narine which stemmed the run flow in the powerplay. He bagged the most crucial wicket of Robi Uthappa when the match looked in the balance. It wasn’t the best of deliveries but the scoreboard pressure got the better of Uthappa and he gave a simple catch to David Warner in the deep.
