The first dead rubber contest of the 2017 IPL season turned out to be thrilling one with the Delhi Daredevils edging past the Gujarat Lions once again narrowly in a high scoring game. At their new home ground, Kanpur, Gujarat posted a big total of 195/5 with the help of Aaron Finch’s 69 and contributions from Dinesh Karthik and Ishan Kishan.
Delhi’s chances looked glum in the chase as they kept losing wickets but a boundary fest from Shreyas Iyer kept them well in the game as the right-hander scored a brilliant 96 but was dismissed in the final over with his side needing 7 more runs. However, Amit Mishra, with some intelligent shots sealed the game for his side with consecutive boundaries.
2 – Number of wickets in hand when Delhi Daredevils chased down the target. This is the joint 2nd smallest margin of win in terms of wickets for any team in the IPL. This was only the 5th instance in the IPL where a team chased down losing 8 or more wickets in a game.
2 – Gujarat Lions are only the 2nd team in the IPL history to play with 3 or fewer foreigners in their XI in consecutive games. Kolkata Knight Riders did it in their first two games of 2011 season.
4 – Number of batsmen who have got out in the nineties in this IPL season; the second most number of nineties’ dismissals in a single IPL season. Five scores of ninety plus were recorded in the 2014 season.
4 – Number of bowlers including Basil Thampi who have dismissed batsmen in the 90s twice in the IPL. Thampi dismissed DD’s Rishabh Pant for 97 in the previous encounter between the two sides while has got Shreyas Iyer for 96 in this game.
7 – Number of times Gujarat Lions batted first in this IPL season. They ended up on the losing side on all the 7 occasions. In their maiden season in the previous season, Gujarat lost 5 out of 6 times when they batted first.
15 – Number of fours hit by Shreyas Iyer in this game, the joint 3rd most by any player in an IPL innings. AB de Villiers and Paul Valthaty hit 19 fours vs MI, 2015 and CSK, 2011 respectively while Ajinkya Rahane and Michael Lumb hit 16 fours each vs KXIP in 2012 and 2010 respectively.
96 – Runs scored by Shreyas Iyer in this game. This is his highest individual score in Twenty20 cricket. Iyer’s previous best in T20s is 86 for Mumbai vs Vidarbha in 2016.
