According to reports by media agency Maxus, the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League was the most popular among all the ten editions, in terms of social media communications. Across some of the famous social media websites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram digital news websites and online forums, over 6 million mentions were recorded. It is more than twice the number of mentions recorded last year.

Maxus’s report states that Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is the most popular team in this year’s IPL. KKR is closely followed by the winning team Mumbai Indians and finalist Rising Pune Supergiant. Virat Kohli was the most popular player last season. But owing to his poor form this year, he slipped down 6 places.

Jigar Rambhia, national director, sports and entertainment partnerships, Maxus India, said there was a huge buzz created in the market by the tenth edition of the annual fiesta. “There was huge buzz created by BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) in the market around the tenth season. The board had organized eight opening ceremonies this time (one in each of the venues), instead of just one like every year. Even the IPL Fan Parks were set up in 36 cities this time. That helped BCCI a lot in making a noise. And of course, the sport itself continues to perform,” said Jigar.

IPL on Television

IPL was a huge success on Television this year. The opening week of IPL 10 fetched 40% higher viewership as compared to last year. Owing to the popularity of the mega event, Sony Max (official broadcaster of IPL) became the most-viewed channel across all genres, according to the reports of television ratings measurement agency Broadcast Audience Research Council (Barc) India.

In terms of advertisement, those made by Vodafone and Amazon fetched the highest hits this season. The ‘Chonkpur Cheetahs’ campaign by Amazon was a major hit amongst the viewers.
