The might of GL's batting might overpower KKR

The Gujarat Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot will be the venue for the 3rd match of the 10th season that features Gujarat Lions lock horns with Kolkata Knight Riders. The Lions made their first appearance in the league last season and enjoyed a great run as they finished on the pole position of the points table after the league stage. Although they failed to make it to the final, yet it was a great run for the new franchise in its inaugural season. The Knight Riders have failed to capitalize on the good starts they made in the last two editions and a playoff spot eluded them.
Both the teams will play their first game of the season and would be hoping to start on a high. The game will start at 8 PM local time on a surface that has a history of producing big runs regardless of the format. The venue has witnessed several high scoring games in the past and even a score of over 200 can’t be considered a winning total. The two games so far in the league have witnessed the teams opting to bowl first after winning the toss and on a belter of a pitch, it seems to be the case in Rajkot too. Additionally, it will be the first occasion when these two teams will meet at the venue as last year, GL had hosted KKR in Kanpur.
Here is what Crictracker predicts for the game:
Scenario 1: GL wins the toss
Toss prediction: GL would choose to bowl first
First innings score prediction: 180-190
Second innings prediction: GL would win the match by 6 wickets with an over in hand
Scenario 2: KKR wins the toss
Toss prediction: KKR would choose to bowl first
First innings score prediction: 200-210
Second innings prediction: GL would win the match by 20-30 runs
Head to Head Record
Overall: Total Matches – 2, GL Won – 2, KKR Won – 0
GL have got the number of KKR as they won both their previous encounters in the last season, once in Kolkata and the other one in Kanpur. In both the matches, KKR had succumbed to the aggressive bowling of GL and scored only 158 and 124 after batting first which GL chased down each time without any hiccups. It will be for the first time in the league so far that two Indian captains will be against each other. The previous record suggests that the Suresh Raina led side has an advantage over the Gautam Gambhir’s troops.
At the start of the season, the GL side seems to have the perfect balance in the batting and bowling departments. To open the innings, they would have two of the most destructive T20 batsmen of all time in Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum. If they stick around for a few overs, both are capable of running away with game. At number 3, the most consistent batsman in the IPL history, Raina will bat who would be hoping to resurrect his international career by doing well this season. He will be followed by Dinesh Karthik who has been in a tremendous form of late and then perhaps the youngster Ishan Kishan will come in to bat.
They will have to take a call between two West Indians Dwayne Smith and Dwayne Bravo. In the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, they might opt for Bravo to play the all-rounder’s role as he can bowl well at the death too. James Faulkner could be the other all-rounder to don the finisher’s role as well as bowl during slog overs. The experienced Praveen Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni will lead the pace battery and Shivil Kaushik and Shadab Jakati are expected to take care of the spin department. They seem to have all the bases covered and on paper, look good for another good season.

Kolkata Knight Riders:
The two -time champions KKR have been a highly competitive side and a tough one to defeat over the last few years. Since Gautam Gambhir took up the leadership role, they have been outstanding especially at home. But they would have to up their game against GL and to start the proceedings, they would have their regular openers Gambhir and Robin Uthappa. Both have formed a formidable combination at the top and would be expected to do the same once more. Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav and Yusuf Pathan might form the middle order and either of Shakib Al Hasan or the in-form Chris Lynn might get a look in.
Andre Russell’s absence would be a big blow for them and to replace him, they have slotted in the Englishman Chris Woakes. He has big shoes to fill in as Russell has been the prolific performer for KKR. The spin department is assured with the presence of Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla. Their latest addition to the squad Trent Boult could be the other pacer in the XI. The side has a number of star performers but they would have to raise their games if they are to inflict their first win against GL.

The history suggests GL have the upper hand over KKR and the lions playing in their own den are expected to come out on top yet again. They possess a strong batting line-up with a number of power hitters and T20 specialists which could prove to be the difference between the two teams.
The odds are in favor of the Gujarat Lions and they could overpower the Knight Riders with their might in the batting.
