The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) stormed into the playoffs of the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) with 16 points from 14 matches. Yesterday, they crossed swords with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The franchise won the match by five wickets and though the contest went down till the last over, the Men in Gold and Purple didn’t seem to stumble at any stage.
Kane Williamson won the toss and thereafter the Sunrisers blazed away courtesy of Shreevats Goswami and Shikhar Dhawan’s exquisite stroke-play. The skipper also looked in ominous touch and scored at a strike-rate of greater than 200. However, the home team completely lost their way in the death overs and lost wickets in clumps. Dinesh Karthik’s men bowled brilliantly and restricted them to 172 runs.
Prasidh Krishna returned with his best IPL figures of 4-0-30-4 and didn’t allow the home team to inject impetus into their innings. Even Muttiah Muralitharan, the bowling coach of SRH, admitted that they were 15-20 runs short. During the run chase, Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine went hell for leather and took the sting out the Sunrisers’ bowling armoury.
A match-winning knock by Lynn
The Australian batsman scored 53 runs in 43 balls and didn’t allow the required rate to escalate. His knock was decorated with four boundaries and three sixes. The Queenslander was eventually dismissed by Siddarth Kaul when he tried clear long-on and holed out to Manish Pandey. Quite rightfully, he was crowned as the Player of the Match.
Following the victory, Lynn was delighted by the contribution of the Knight Riders as a unit. Meanwhile, he also pledged to take the winning momentum to the next round. They are most likely to play their next match at the Eden Gardens. Meanwhile, the 28-year old cricketer took to Twitter and expressed his jubilation.
Awesome effort from the @KKRiders lads to take momentum into the finals. Every player chipping in, Great signs! See you soon Eden Gardens
