The build up to the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has already begun. The buzz around the much awaited auctions is the hot topic in the media at the moment. All the franchises are scratching their heads to get their permutations right in order to retain the best possible combination of players. Delhi Daredevils is no exception either.

The Delhi franchise is pondering over retaining the domestic talent ahead of the auctions. The rules allow each team to retain a maximum of 3 players prior to the auctions. IPL GC has set January 4 as the cut off date for the teams to submit their list of players retained. Also, the franchises can get back to more players on their roster by using their Right to Match cards.

As per the recent reports in the Mid Day, Delhi Daredevils are considering the retention of two young Indian aces – Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. While Pant has played for India in early 2017, Shreyas Iyer has been a regular face in the Indian team in their previous two limited overs assignments. Iyer has performed decently too, and had almost notched up his maiden ODI ton in a game against Sri Lanka recently.

Meanwhile, Pant has had a tremendous run in the domestic circuit over the last two years. He recently led Delhi to the finals of the Ranji Trophy this season.

Benefits of retaining uncapped players

Interestingly, the franchises could pretty well feel the need to retain the uncapped players over the capped cricketers. Retaining an uncapped player would mean shelling out almost half the amount of what is required to retain a capped player.

“If you retain two capped players, you spend Rs 21 crore (Rs 12.5 crore for Player 1 and Rs 8.5 for Player 2) instead of Rs 33 crore for three capped players (Rs 15 crore for Player 1, Rs 11 crore for Player 2 and Rs 7 crore for Player 3),” a senior BCCI official explained.

In other news, team Chennai Super Kings is certain to retain MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Ravindra Jadeja. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians are considering the option of retaining the Pandya brothers.
