Delhi Daredevils have been having a woeful season, which saw them spend much of their time in the bottom half, forcing initial skipper Gautam Gambhir to step down. Although after Shreyas Iyer took up the reigns there appeared a shimmer of hope, but it too was short-lived. With yesterday’s loss against table toppers SRH, Delhi has now risked potential elimination as they have garnered only 6 points from 10 matches. Two dropped catches cost Delhi Daredevils the crucial game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Opener Alex Hales who went on to score a scintillating 45 was dropped by Glenn Maxwell at deep mid-wicket boundary off Avesh Khan when the batsman was on 9. Pathan’s dropped catch by Vijay Shankar was one of the game-changing moments during the chase as SRH won the match by seven wickets with a ball to spare.

Speaking about the missed opportunities, DD assistant coach Pravin Amre was quoted saying by Times Now, “On this wicket, we batted well in the power play by getting 60 runs. I think that was very crucial. Prithvi’s knock was so critical to give that foundation. But we were 10 runs short in the end.”

He added, “After that also, we came back strongly. In seven overs we did not give a single boundary to them. I think the match was on. The saying is that catches win matches. We dropped two crucial ones.”

Match Details

With the loss, Delhi edged closer to elimination as the Sunrisers pushed them towards the exit door with a seven-wicket victory. Batting first, Delhi suffered an early setback as Maxwell has to face a dramatic exit. Prithvi Shaw, in a usual fashion, started hitting and gave a great start who was joined in by skipper Shreyas Iyer.

Delhi was comfortably poised at 125/2 at 15 overs, optimistic of a big total. But a mixture of brain fade and terrific execution of slower balls and yorkers by SRH bowlers choked the run-flow as they finished with 164 runs on the board.

For Hyderabad, Yusuf Pathan and skipper Kane Williamson kept their calm surpassing the 164-run target in 19.5 overs on a tricky surface. Pathan’s dropped catch by Vijay Shankar was one of the game-changing moments during the chase.
