Chennai Super Kings put the final nail in the coffin for Kings XI Punjab last night, after the southpaws won the match by 5 runs and in the process forced the Kings out of the playoffs. With the win, the MS Dhoni-led team confirmed their second position and will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the first qualifier of IPL 2018.

Put into bat first, the Punjab side needed to win by a margin of at least 53 runs or more to end in the top four. However, their top order failed to deliver and suffered an incredible collapse that left the away side reeling.

The main man behind CSK’s fine show with the ball was South African youngster Lungi Ngidi, who returned with impressive figures of 4/10 in his four overs, which included the wickets of openers KL Rahul and Chris Gayle. He also accounted for Ravi Ashwin and Andrew Tye’s dismissals, both of whom were sent back without troubling the scorers.

The wicket of Ashwin especially was standout for a rather peculiar reason. Ashwin played and seemingly missed a ball that went to MS Dhoni behind the stumps. Ngidi thought he had heard a nick but he was the only person to have heard so, with even Dhoni, who has one of the sharpest ears in the business, declining that he heard any noise. However, the skipper took the review at the bowler’s behest and it turned out to be a good one as Ashwin did get a slight touch on the ball.

Chasing 154, Chennai didn’t get the start they wanted as opener Ambati Rayudu departed for 3 runs in the second over off Mohit Sharma’s delivery. The middle order also failed to get going and eventually it was Raina who stabilized the run chase with a sublime 61. In the end, skipper MS Dhoni remained unbeaten and supported Raina ensuring Chennai crossed the finishing line.

Earlier, Lungi Ngidi’s fiery bowling spell (4/10) helped Chennai bowl out Punjab for 154 runs.
