The Mumbai Indians breathed a sigh of relief yet again as they managed to overhaul the target set by Kings XI Punjab in Indore. The defending champions are in a precarious situation this season. They need to win all their remaining games to be alive in the contest. Hence, their away game against the Kings was a must win game for them.

Their skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Kings XI Punjab got a brilliant start with KL Rahul and Chris Gayle showing good form. However, once Gayle perished after his fifty, the innings failed to continued on the momentum. Karun Nair and Marcus Stoinis made handy contributions towards the end to take the KXIP total to 174 in the 20 overs.

In the run chase, Mumbai Indians lost Evin Lewis early but Suryakumar Yadav held the innings together with his timely 57. Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, and Rohit Sharma made valuable contributions to keep the run chase alive. But the real game changer was Krunal Pandya who smashed a quick 31 to see his side over the line with 6 wickets in hand.

Here are the Mumbai Indians player ratings for the match:

Suryakumar Yadav – 9/10

Suryakumar Yadav has by far been the best batsman for the Mumbai Indians in the season. The veteran campaigner continued his good form with the bat in this game as well. He scored a timely 57 off just 42 deliveries to guide the run chase at a proper pace after the visitors had lost Evin Lewis early in the run chase.

Evin Lewis – 1/10

Evin Lewis came back in to the MI lineup for this particular game. His stay at the crease did not look very comfortable though. Lewis was dismissed in the 6th over of the innings by Mujeeb Rahman. He could only muster 10 runs in the 13 balls that he faced in the game.

Ishan Kishan – 4/10

Ishan Kishan had a decent time with the bat in the match. He came in to bat at number three in the game. He gave good support to Suryakumar Yadav and contributed with vital 25 runs off 19 deliveries. His knock was studded with 3 sixes. He could have done better by staying at the crease till the very end for his side.

Hardik Pandya – 5/10

Hardik Pandya got a big promotion in the game and was sent in to bat at number four in the run chase. Pandya did a reasonably good job of a pinch hitter. He hit a quick 23 off 13 deliveries with a couple of fours and a six to his name. Earlier in the game, he had a very rough time with the ball as he conceded 44 runs in the four overs that he bowled. He got the wicket of Mayank Agarwal in the final over of the KXIP innings.

Rohit Sharma – 6/10

Rohit Sharma used strange tactics in the game today. Not only did he surprise everyone with his bowling choices but also ended up amusing many by coming in to bat at number 5. Much to his relief, his side won the game and he played a cameo of unbeaten 24 off 15 deliveries.

Krunal Pandya – 8.5/10

When the wickets of Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan fell in quick succession, the Kings XI Punjab felt they had a sniff in the game. But it was Krunal Pandya who changed the script by playing a whirlwind blitz. The senior Pandya hit an unbeaten 31 off just 12 balls with four boundaries and a couple of sixes to his name on the day. With the ball, he was given only one over to bowl in the match.

JP Duminy – 3/10

JP Duminy did not have a major role to play in the match today. He was given only one over to bowl in the match. Later, his services with the bat were not needed by the Mumbai Indians.

Ben Cutting – 5/10

In the last few days, there have been talks about certain overseas players being underused by their respective franchises. Ben Cutting from the Mumbai Indians was one of the players in the list. In this particular game, Rohit Sharma showed more faith in his overseas recruit and gave him 3 overs to bowl. Cutting conceded 28 runs in those three overs and returned with the big wicket of Chris Gayle.

Mayank Markande – 4/10

Young leggie Mayank Markande seems to have lost his magic with the ball. The leggie had made some serious impact in the first few games but now, the teams seem to have figured him out pretty well. Markande returned with figures of 1/29 in the three overs that he bowled. He gave the first breakthrough to the MI side by dismissing KL Rahul in the 7th over.

Mitchell McClenaghan – 6/10

Mitchell McClenaghan had a decent time with the ball on the day. With the powerhouse opening duo being against him, the Kiwi cricketer did decently well to contain them. He gave away 31 runs in the four overs that he bowled in the match. He got the wicket of Karun Nair in the middle overs on the day.

Jasprit Bumrah – 9/10

Jasprit Bumrah led the Mumbai Indians bowling right from the front. Bumrah was totally unplayable on the day and he came up with some seriously good lines and lengths on the day. In his quota of four overs, Bumrah only conceded 19 runs and got the wicket of Axar Patel.
