Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has been among the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a couple of titles under their belt. The opening three seasons turned out to be disappointing for the franchise, however, their fortunes started turning when Gautam Gambhir took over the leadership baton in 2011.
The Knights won their maiden title in 2012 and repeated the feat in the 2014 season as well. Over the course of their illustrious journey, they also have boasted of players like Shoaib Akhtar, Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle, Brett Lee who have delivered for the franchise. However, this time around the Knights might be encountering few issues ahead of the eleventh season.
Gambhir has moved to the Delhi Daredevils, which sparked the captaincy conundrum for the franchise. However, they quashed all doubts and appointed Dinesh Karthik as the skipper. The Knights also have some injury concerns ahead of the tournament. Mitchell Starc, the ace Australian paceman, has recently been ruled out of the fourth test against South Africa as well as the IPL owing to a heel strain.
Vaughan’s backing for the Knights
Windies all-rounder Andre Russell and Aussie fast-bowler Mitchell Johnson have also suffered injuries lately, which is definitely a worrying factor for the Knights. Also, Sunil Narine has been reported for suspect bowling action, playing for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, despite the issues, Michael Vaughan feels that the Knights have the capability to lift the trophy.
The former English cricketer was asked by a fan regarding team he is supporting and he replied with Kolkata Knight Riders. However, Vaughan will be supporting the Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming edition of the T20 extravaganza. He wrote
“Supporting @rajasthanroyals … but I think @KKRiders might Win this year ….”
