While some teams opted to retain three, a few held on to two and some opted for a solitary player. The teams now have another chance to keep their player using the Right To Match (RTM) card. The retention has increased the excitement for the upcoming IPL 2018 auction which is scheduled for 27, 28 January.

With Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals making a comeback in this year&#8217;s IPL, it was expected that they would want to sign up the nucleus of their team that played in 2015. While CSK have done that retaining MS Dhoni, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/rashid-khan-suresh-raina-exchange-mutual-praises-twitter/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Suresh Raina</a> and Ravindra Jadeja, RR opted just for Steve Smith. While a few teams are spoilt for choice some need to be careful and not fall for retaining a player that wouldn&#8217;t add as much value.

Darren Bravo, Surya Kumar Yadav, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/colin-de-grandhomme-back-for-the-last-three-odis-against-pakistan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Colin de Grandhomme</a>, Trent Boult and Piyush Chawla are the five big names who we believe should not be retained by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming IPL auction.

Bravo was considered a highly impressive prospect at the start of his career due to the similarities in his game-play with legendary West Indian cricketer Brian Lara. However, the 28-year-old was largely relegated to the sidelines last season and scored just 6 runs in the sole match he was involved in. Having failed to make a lasting impression with his performances, it will not be wise to retain the West Indian at any cost.

Yadav and Grandhomme are examples of players who failed to make an impact for the Knight Riders in-spite of enjoying a solid reputation on the back of impressive domestic performances. Yadav managed to muster simply 105 runs in 10 matches while Grandhomme fared no better scoring 126 runs in 12 matches.

Trent Boult was someone who enjoyed the confidence of captain <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/reports-hint-ipl-franchise-gautam-gambhir-join/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gautam Gambhir</a> and was purchased for a high price of 5 crores.  5 wickets in 6 matches certainly indicate that he was not worthy of the sum paid and is certainly not worth being retained.

Piyush Chawla has been a top performer for the Knight Riders in the past but his performance last season in the IPL where he picked just 6 wickets in 6 games at a high economy rate of 8.95 make him unsuitable for retention.

KXIP should be wary of retaining these names- <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/darren-sammys-international-career-in-numbers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Darren Sammy</a>, Shaun Marsh, Martin Guptill, Eoin Morgan and Ishant Sharma

RCB shouldn&#8217;t retain- Tymal Mills, Travis Head, Chris Gayle, Shane Watson  and Kedar Jadhav

Chris Gayle and Shane Watson might have been top T20 performers for a significant period of time but considering their recent increasingly frequent injuries and diminishing consistency, it will be wise to go for a young replacement in Evin Lewis rather than retaining them. Watson hardly managed to score 71 runs in 8 matches which is not a reasonable tally for retention.

The less said about Tymal Mills the better considering how poor his performances were after being purchased for an inflated sum increasing expectations to a whole new level. He managed to pick just 5 wickets in 5 matches which certainly is not a fair return on investment.

Travis Head has failed to make his presence felt so far as he managed just 151 runs in 7 matches in the previous edition and is also not a regular part of the Australian cricket team. Kedar Jadhav, on the other hand, can be a good option for a Right to match card considering his talent but does not deserve a retention having scored 267 runs in 13 matches.

Sam Billings, Corey Anderson, Carlos Braithwaite, Mohammed Shami and Angelo Mathews are the five cricketers from among the Daredevils who will not be retained. Billings, the Englishman flattered to deceive after an impressive first season in the IPL scoring just 138 runs in 6 matches last season.

Anderson and Braithwaite have delivered very little after promising the skies for their respective national teams. Anderson merely scored 142 runs in 11 matches picking 3 wickets while Braithwaite managed a tally of 12 runs in 2 matches he got to play.

Darren Bravo, Surya Kumar Yadav, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/colin-de-grandhomme-back-for-the-last-three-odis-against-pakistan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Colin de Grandhomme</a>, Trent Boult and Piyush Chawla are the five big names who we believe should not be retained by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming IPL auction.
Bravo was considered a highly impressive prospect at the start of his career due to the similarities in his game-play with legendary West Indian cricketer Brian Lara. However, the 28-year-old was largely relegated to the sidelines last season and scored just 6 runs in the sole match he was involved in. Having failed to make a lasting impression with his performances, it will not be wise to retain the West Indian at any cost.
Yadav and Grandhomme are examples of players who failed to make an impact for the Knight Riders in-spite of enjoying a solid reputation on the back of impressive domestic performances. Yadav managed to muster simply 105 runs in 10 matches while Grandhomme fared no better scoring 126 runs in 12 matches.
Trent Boult was someone who enjoyed the confidence of captain <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/reports-hint-ipl-franchise-gautam-gambhir-join/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gautam Gambhir</a> and was purchased for a high price of 5 crores.  5 wickets in 6 matches certainly indicate that he was not worthy of the sum paid and is certainly not worth being retained.
Piyush Chawla has been a top performer for the Knight Riders in the past but his performance last season in the IPL where he picked just 6 wickets in 6 games at a high economy rate of 8.95 make him unsuitable for retention.
<h3>2. Mumbai Indians</h3>

The five players MI shouldn&#8217;t retain are Lendl Simmons, Tim Southee, Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga.
<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/harbhajan-singh-shares-dinner-with-pca-stadium-groundsman/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Harbhajan Singh</a> and Lasith Malinga have been a part of the Mumbai Indians lineup since the first season and enjoyed a lot of glory over the years. However, it will not be a wise decision to extend their journey with the franchise beyond the last season considering their recent serious injuries due to age and lack of active cricketing action.
Harbhajan has not been involved in prime action for some time now. He managed to swoop just 8 wickets in 11 matches while Malinga bagged 11 wickets in 12 games at a high economy rate of 8.52 last season.
Simmons and Southee failed to deliver performances deserving a retention during the last edition of the IPL while the serious talent available amongst the domestic batsmen makes retaining Rayudu an incorrect decision. The West Indian managed to score only 137 runs in 7 matches last season while Southee merely picked 3 wickets in 3 games. Rayudu was a poor performer last season managing to put up just 91 runs in 5 games.
<h3>3. Kings XI Punjab</h3>

KXIP should be wary of retaining these names- <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/darren-sammys-international-career-in-numbers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Darren Sammy</a>, Shaun Marsh, Martin Guptill, Eoin Morgan and Ishant Sharma
Sammy and Marsh have not enjoyed a regular run in recent times with the West Indian&#8217;s involvement in cricket restricted to the odd franchise-based T20 competitions he is a part of. Marsh has also not been in the thick of prime T20 action in recent times scoring just 264 runs in 9 matches he was a part of last season.
Martin Guptill and Eoin Morgan have simply failed to be consistent and meet the demands of the IPL over the years which makes retaining them too big a risk. Guptill managed to score 132 runs in 7 matches last season while Morgan recorded a paltry score of 65 runs in 4 matches.
Ishant Sharma has not enjoyed much success in the limited-overs format of the game which rules him out at the same time having emerged wicketless in 6 matches.
<h3>4. Royal Challengers Bangalore</h3>

RCB shouldn&#8217;t retain- Tymal Mills, Travis Head, Chris Gayle, Shane Watson  and Kedar Jadhav
Chris Gayle and Shane Watson might have been top T20 performers for a significant period of time but considering their recent increasingly frequent injuries and diminishing consistency, it will be wise to go for a young replacement in Evin Lewis rather than retaining them. Watson hardly managed to score 71 runs in 8 matches which is not a reasonable tally for retention.
The less said about Tymal Mills the better considering how poor his performances were after being purchased for an inflated sum increasing expectations to a whole new level. He managed to pick just 5 wickets in 5 matches which certainly is not a fair return on investment.
Travis Head has failed to make his presence felt so far as he managed just 151 runs in 7 matches in the previous edition and is also not a regular part of the Australian cricket team. Kedar Jadhav, on the other hand, can be a good option for a Right to match card considering his talent but does not deserve a retention having scored 267 runs in 13 matches.
<h3>5. Delhi Daredevils</h3>

Sam Billings, Corey Anderson, Carlos Braithwaite, Mohammed Shami and Angelo Mathews are the five cricketers from among the Daredevils who will not be retained. Billings, the Englishman flattered to deceive after an impressive first season in the IPL scoring just 138 runs in 6 matches last season.
Anderson and Braithwaite have delivered very little after promising the skies for their respective national teams. Anderson merely scored 142 runs in 11 matches picking 3 wickets while Braithwaite managed a tally of 12 runs in 2 matches he got to play.
Shami, on the other hand, is not very effective in the T20 format and enjoys a high economy rate making him an unsuitable pick. Shami picked just 5 wickets in 8 matches at an economy rate of 9.34.
The <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/angelo-mathews-inspiration-to-take-up-captaincy-again/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sri Lankan captain</a> was recently ruled out with a critical injury during the series against India and considering his ever-declining fitness levels over the years is not a good option to retain. Mathews was also a poor performer during the last IPL racking up just 32 runs in 3 matches.
<h3>6. Sunrisers Hyderabad</h3>

SRH wouldn&#8217;t want to hold on to- Chirs Jordan, Moises Henriques, Kane Williamson, Ben Cutting and Yuvraj Singh.
Chris Jordan, the English all-rounder has not enjoyed a lot of success in India with the lack of effective variations making him an easy target. Jordan was highly unsuccessful last season managing to pick just 1 wicket at an economy rate of 9.
Moises Henriques has been a vital member of the setup but does not enjoy the qualities necessary for a retention. Having managed 277 runs in 12 matches, Henriques&#8217; all-around abilities may fail to make him an attractive option for retention.
Kane Williamson and Ben Cutting have shown some form in the last season for the Sunrisers but questions emerge over their ability to retain the same consistency expected from a retained player. Williamson scored 265 runs in 7 matches last season while Cutting picked 1 wicket in 4 matches scoring 51 runs.
Last but not the least, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/stats-yuvraj-singhs-slowest-fifties-t20-cricket/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yuvraj Singh</a> may be a safe bet to invest in during the auction but his lack of exposure to strenuous cricketing action in recent times which the IPL demands sadly puts him on the blacklist for retentions. Singh managed to score just 252 runs in 12 matches last season.
