The league phase of the eleventh edition Indian Premier League (IPL) has come to an end and the top four teams have now qualified for the playoffs. While Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had sealed their place earlier, the other two spots were up for grabs until the last few matches. In the end, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) managed to sneak through with the brilliant performance at crunch situations. However, it was by far the best season as far as the competition between the teams is concerned.

It was Delhi Daredevils (DD) who punched above their weight to knock out the defending champions and one of the title favourites CSK in their last league matches. Though they were not able to qualify, the team ended the season on high thereby raising the hopes of a better showing next year. DD finished as the wooden spooners this year with 10 points to their name after playing 14 matches. They were at the bottom of the points table in 2015 as well when the miserable season had seen them winning only a couple of matches in the league stage.

What is the record?

This is the first time in the history of the IPL that all the teams have managed to reach 10 points in the league stages. Almost all the matches went down the wire and this edition saw most of them ending in the last over. Interestingly, there was not even one Super Over unlike the previous seasons and the possibility of it happening in the playoffs cannot be overruled.

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) started the season with a bang but tailed off as the season progressed and eventually finished at the seventh position. The first qualifier of the season now will be played between CSK and SRH on Tuesday even as the Royals and the Knight Riders will clash in the eliminator. It will be interesting to see which two teams face off the in the mega final on May 27 at the Wankhede Stadium.
