IPL 2019: A heartbroken Gautam Gambhir wants KKR to go for the kill

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at one point in time, were placed in the top of the points table in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). The team, captained by Dinesh Karthik, won four out of their first five matches and was one of the top contenders to qualify for the playoffs if not finish in the top two. However, things have drastically changed for the Men in Gold and Purple.

The franchise has lost their last five matches and is well and truly staring down the barrel as far as qualifying is concerned. The Knights are currently placed at the sixth points of the points table with four wins from 10 matches and are required to win their remaining four matches in order to stay alive. Their next match is against the Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens on April 25.

A saddened Gautam Gambhir

Sunday, April 21, turned out to be a disastrous day for the Knight Riders as they slumped to a shambolic nine-wicket defeat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. After being put in to bat first, KKR could only manage 159 after which the likes of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow scored half-centuries to take SRH over the finishing line.

The loss hasn’t gone down well with the Kolkata supporters, one of them being Gautam Gambhir, who has a memorable history, having represented the franchise for seven years and winning two championships as well. Gambhir mentioned that he is finding it tough to see his former IPL team capitulate. However, he also urged the KKR players to not lose heart and rather go for the kill.

The 37-year-old Delhi-born cricketer took to Twitter and wrote, “It’s tough to see @KKRiders go down like this. Come on guys there is loads of talent in that dressing room. Just regroup fast, believe in yourself and go for the kill. We can do it!!!!!!,”
