Kolkata Knight Riders’ title ambitions suffered a massive blow as their stalwart all-rounder Andre Russell has been ruled out owing to a shoulder injury. The Caribbean cricketer had dislocated his shoulder during the second innings in the game against Delhi Capitals in the 16th over. Russell is expected to remain out of the game for a good three weeks, much to the disappointment of the KKR fans.

The news was confirmed in a press conference on Monday, where head coach Jacques Kallis said it would be a “big blow” for the team. This is a huge scare not just for the Knight Riders, but also for the Windies national team with World Cup looming around the horizon.

Stops a boundary; Hurts the shoulder

Russell had already hurt his left shoulder before this tournament and when Prithvi Shaw drove straight to him at mid-off, the all-rounder dived to stop a certain boundary, but at the expense of resurrecting the injury. He left the field after that over and didn’t come back to bowl despite having an over to his name.

With great pain to his shoulder, he came out to bat in the Super Over. He smashed a boundary off the first ball but struggled profusely to make an impact as he eventually got out on the third ball. Delhi Capital won the game by the skin of their teeth courtesy an outstanding super over from the South African Kagiso Rabada.

After rescuing KKR against the Sunrisers miraculously with a 19-ball 49, he once again registered a 17-ball 48 against Kings XI Punjab. It was his 28-ball 62 which helped Kolkata muster a total in excess of 180 against Capitals and clearly, his impact will be missed.
