The IPL 2019 is not going well for some franchises and this despite some of them having a rehaul of their players and team staff before the season. Royal Challengers Bangalore, for instance, has lost all six of their matches and now need to win all of the remaining eight matches to have a chance at qualifying for the playoffs.
Similarly, Rajasthan Royals have lost four of their five matches and are on the verge of joining Royal Challengers Bangalore on their way out of the IPL 2019 even before the second half of the tournament begins. There have been calls for the removal of Virat Kohli as RCB captain given that in his seven years as captain, the team has never won the IPL and has reached the finals just once in 2016.
Rajasthan Royals had appointed Paddy Upton as their coach for this IPL and RCB had brought in India’s 2011 World Cup winning coach Gary Kirsten on board as head coach in IPL 2018. Unlike Tom Moody of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Stephen Fleming of Chennai Super Kings, these coaches have not been able to find success for their franchises.
Kevin Pietersen wonders if IPL teams will sack coach mid-season
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen, who is commentating in the IPL, has been part of various teams in the league during his playing days, has taken to Twitter and wondered that given the performances of some of the franchises in the ongoing Indian Premier League, will those teams sack their support staff and coach mid-season, as it is done in Football leagues all over the world.
Stephen Fleming has coached Chennai Super Kings since 2009 and Tom Moody has been with the Sunrisers Hyderabad for a long time and the results have shown. On the other side, Kings XI Punjab have chopped and changed their coaches and captain on a regular basis and have managed just one finals appearance in their tenure in IPL.
Kevin Pietersen tweeted, “I wonder when the @IPL franchises will follow the football route and sack a coach during the season? Thoughts?”
