It’s a season of parting ways and continuing with relationships for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises. The teams are already in the process of retaining and releasing players ahead of the auction for the next season (2019), which will be the 12th. Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have released three players ahead of the next IPL and it had a touching separation with one of them: Mark Wood.

Wood, a right-arm fast bowler from England, made his debut in the IPL in 2018 for the CSK but got to play only one game in the entire tournament in which he conceded 49 runs in four overs without any success. He was released along with Kanishk Seth and Kshitiz Sharma who didn’t get to play in a single game. Wood, who has played 12 Tests, 35 ODIs and four T20Is and has 72 international wickets, is the only international player to have been released by CSK ahead of the next season.

The Super Kings, who returned to the tournament after serving a suspension of two seasons (2016 and 2017) went on to win the trophy under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has led them in all editions they have played since 2008. The franchise, which won its third title in 2018 to equal the feat of the Mumbai Indians, has retained veterans like Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir and Dwayne Bravo besides the skipper Dhoni who was in great form in the last season, especially with the bat.

Wood, CSK spare good words for each other

Wood took to Twitter on Friday to make a humble post thanking the Super Kings for their support after learning that he would not be with them this year. He thanked the CSK fans for their “unforgettable support” and wished the team all the best for the next season. The 28-year-old pace bowler’s tweet received over 10k likes and was retweeted over a thousand times.

The CSK did not avoid its responsibility of responding to Wood’s touching tweet. It also posted a tweet on Saturday saying Wood’s memories will be treasured by the fans forever. “…your few weeks with the Pride will be etched in every #yellove hearted fan’s memories immortalised forever in the form of some of the very best songs,” a part of the tweet read.
