The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stuttered in their match against Mumbai Indians (MI) but managed to make a strong comeback as they defeated the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 22 runs. Subsequently, the team captained MS Dhoni, moved to the top of the points table in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). The Ravi Ashwin-led Punjab moved one place down to the fourth position.

CSK post a significant score

The Super Kings’ decision to bat first didn’t misfire as the hosts racked up 160 in their 20 overs. Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis cobbled together a steady opening-wicket partnership of 56 runs off 44 deliveries. Ravi Ashwin gave KXIP their first breakthrough, dismissing Watson for 26. Thereafter, Suresh Raina joined Du Plessis in the middle and added 44 runs for the second wicket.

Du Plessis, playing his first match in this IPL, scored his half-century in 33 balls. He got out to leg-spinner Murugun Ashwin after getting 54 runs from 38 balls with two fours and four over-boundaries. Raina strained a wee bit and could manage only 17 from 20 balls. Dhoni played a whirlwind knock of 37 from 23. Even Ambati Rayudu scored 21 from 15 to propel CSK’s score in the death overs.

Punjab fall short

The visiting team didn’t have the best of starts as Harbhajan Singh was able to make some inroads into the KXIP batting lineup. The veteran spinner first nipped out Chris Gayle through an outside edge. Mayank Agarwal got out for a duck after unsuccessfully trying to clear the boundary, holing out to Du Plessis. Thereafter, KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan tried to bring back sanity into the proceedings.

Both put on 110 runs for the third wicket and got Punjab close. Sarfaraz and Rahul brought up their fifties in 42 and 41 deliveries. Scott Kuggelejin nipped out Rahul to break the ominous-looking stand. Rahul ended on 55 from 47 with three fours and one six. Sarfaraz played well, but couldn’t press the accelerator before falling prey to Kuggelejin. In the end, CSK restricted KXIP to 138.
