In a rematch of last year’s second qualifier, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), two of most consistent teams in recent years – will kickstart their IPL 2019 campaign against each other at the iconic Eden Gardens. Last year, the SRH had the last laugh in the qualifier and the Knight Riders will be keen to avenge for that loss at home this year. Beating the Sunrisers, however, will not be an easy task for the two-time IPL champions.
The Hyderabad-led side has performed better than any team in the past three years – winning the title in 2016, making it to the playoffs in 2017 before ending up as runners-up last season. They look primed to make it far this year too after assembling a strong squad. They have been boosted by new additions like Jonny Bairstow and Martin Guptill. Their former skipper David Warner has also returned to the team after missing the last season in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal.
KKR, on the other hand, just know how to make the most of their limited resources. With the likes of Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, Robin Uthappa, Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik and Carlos Brathwaite, they have a batting department which can tear apart any bowling attack. Kuldeep Yadav and Narine make a formidable spin pair but there is some lack of depth in the pace bowling department especially after Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Anrich Nortje were ruled out of entire season with injuries.
As far as stats are concerned, both the teams have met 15 times in the IPL so far. The Knight Riders have won 9 of them while the remaining six went to Sunrisers’ side. In recent years, this fixture has been one of the most entertaining ones and the fans would be keen to see the game living up to the expectations once again.
How will be the weather in Kolkata?
The match is likely to go ahead without any interruptions from the rain god. According to AccuWeather, the temperature will be on the lower side of the 30s when the game will be underway and will decrease as the game wears on. There was some rain earlier this week in the city and there were fears that the season opener of the Knight Riders might be interrupted. However, there are no predictions of rain during the match.
