Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) dominated for a chunk of their game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. After a number of twists and turns, it was the hosts, captained by Ravi Ashwin, who managed to emerge victorious in the cliffhanger by six wickets. From the sixth position, Punjab moved to the third position of the table even as SRH moved one place down to the fourth slot.

Warner stands out

Punjab won the toss and elected to field first and their bowlers did an excellent job, restricting SRH to 150 runs in 20 overs. The Sunrisers lost Jonny Bairstow early to Mujeeb Ur Rahman. David Warner and Vijay Shankar took their time initially and took the team to 27 runs in the mandatory powerplay. Warner strained to find bat on ball and relied mostly on singles to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The duo added 49 runs, after which Ravi Ashwin got rid of Shankar for 26 runs. Mohammad Nabi was promoted up the order and he got out to a run out at the non-striker’s end. At the other end, Warner picked his pace up and scored his half-century in 49 balls. The southpaw eventually remained not out on 70 from 62. Manish Pandey and Deepak Hooda contributed with 19 and 14 runs respectively.

Rahul and Mayank do the job

The KXIP batsmen were in no mood to die wondering. Chris Gayle found the boundary a couple of time following which Rashid Khan nipped him out. The Jamaican tried to go downtown, only to find Deepak Hooda in the deep. Thereafter, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal took charge and didn’t allow the required rate to mount. The SRH bowlers tried their hearts out, but the Punjab batsmen were unstoppable.

They added 114 runs in 84 balls to put their team in a position of command. Rahul was the first to accomplish his fifty in 34 deliveries. Then it was the turn of Agarwal to get to his half-century in 40 balls. Agarwal got out for 55 runs. However, with 20 runs needed from 20 balls, KXIP huffed and puffed as 11 runs were needed in the last over. Rahul remained not out on 71 runs to help his team win the match.
