The encounter between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai turned out to be an absolute cliffhanger. The game was a roller coaster ride and in the end, Rohit Sharma and Co won by three wickets courtesy of a superlative knock from Kieron Pollard. With the victory, Mumbai moved to the third position of the table with Punjab at number four.

Rahul shows his class

Mumbai won the toss and elected to field first, but it backfired to a large extent courtesy of a stupendous opening-wicket stand between Chris Gayle and KL Rahul. The duo added 116 runs in 12.5 overs to push the hosts on the backfoot. Even as Rahul played second-fiddle, Gayle went hammer and tongs to get his fifty in 31 balls. Jason Behrendorff got rid of him after he scored 63 from 36 balls.

Gayle’s knock was laced with three fours and seven sixes. Punjab lost a few quick wickets thereafter as David Miller, Karun Nair and Sam Curran got out for single-digit scores. Nevertheless, Rahul pressed the accelerator in the death overs and notched his maiden IPL century in 64 balls with the help of six boundaries and as many sixes. He remained not out and Punjab ended with 197 for four in 20 overs.

Pollard seals the deal for Mumbai

Quinton de Kock and Siddhesh Lad, who replaced Rohit Sharma, started well. Lad hit a couple of fours off Ankit Rajpoot, but Mohammed Shami rattled his woodwork. Suryakumar Yadav looked good for his 21 with four fours and he was nipped out by Tom Curran. De Kock and Ishan Kishan also perished cheaply. The home team found themselves in troubles as the required-rate also escalated alarmingly.

In the last eight overs, Mumbai needed 104 runs and they had Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard to get them home. Hardik got out to Shami, but Pollard raced away to a fifty in 22 balls. The Trinidadian ended up scoring 83 runs from 31 balls with three sixes and 10 sixes. He was nipped out by Rajpoot in the last over. In the last three balls, MI needed four runs and Alzarri Joseph got the MI home in the last ball.
