The match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata turned out to be a high-scoring affair. Eventually, it was DC, captained by Shreyas Iyer, who came out trumps and won by seven wickets. The Knights batted well, but their bowling couldn’t build any sort of pressure on the Capitals. With the victory, DC moved to the fourth spot of the points table.

Gill and Russell take charge

The Knights made as many as three changes for the game and after losing the toss, scored 178 for seven in 20 overs. Joe Denly, playing his maiden IPL match, was castled by Ishant Sharma in the very first ball. Then Shubman Gill and Robin Uthappa cobbled together a stand of 63 runs to bring KKR back into the contest. Uthappa strained a wee bit and got out to Kagiso Rabada after scoring 28 from 30 balls.

Nitish Rana also couldn’t get going. Nevertheless, Gill carried on in his own merry way and notched his second IPL half-century in 34 balls. The Fazilka-born batter ended up notching 65 runs from 39 balls with the help of seven boundaries and a couple of sixes. After Keemo Paul dismissed him, Andre Russell came to the party and blasted 45 runs from 21 with three fours and four sixes to propel KKR’s score.

The Capitals romp home

The Capitals started with positive intent as Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw played their strokes freely. Prasidh Krishna gave KKR their first breakthrough with Shaw’s wicket. Andre Russell nipped out the DC captain Shreyas Iyer. Thereafter, it was the turn of Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant to get the visitors close. The duo blended caution with aggression and didn’t allow the required rate to go up.

They added 105 runs for the third wicket. Pant scored 46 runs from 31 deliveries with four boundaries and two sixes. Nitish Rana got rid of him in the 18th over to separate the ominous-looking duo. Dhawan also took calculated risks and remained not out on 97 from 63. His knock was laced with 11 fours and two sixes. Colin Ingram hit two big shots to take the visitors over the line with seven balls to spare.
