22 days into the tournament, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) got the first taste of a win in the 2019 season of IPL but not before losing as many as six matches. They took on the Kings XI Punjab, a line-up which had as many as five players whose previous franchise was RCB. Chris Gayle batted through the innings for the home team scoring an unbeaten 99. Despite his efforts, Kings XI finished with only 173/4, a par total given the conditions. Fifties from skipper Virat Kohli (67) and AB de Villiers (59*) ensured RCB got their first points of the season.
Here are the lesser known stats from Kings XI Punjab’s first home defeat in the 2019 season:
End of the “Sevens” for RCB and KXIP:
Coming into the game, the Kings XI Punjab had won each of their last seven matches in the IPL at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. It was their longest winning streak at any venue in the IPL till date. The Royal Challengers Bangalore came into this game having lost each of their last seven IPL matches including all six in 2019, their longest losing streak ever. However, even in these drought times, the RCB managed to break the KXIP fortress and add points to their name.
Gayle’s highest in a defeat:
Batting on 95 with two balls to go, Chris Gayle missed the penultimate ball and hit the final ball for a four. Thus, he ended up one run short of his 7th century in the IPL while no other player has more than four. Interestingly, all his six hundreds in the IPL ended up on the winning side. Had he reached the 100 in this game, it could have been his first in a defeat at the IPL.
Nevertheless, his 99* is now his highest individual IPL score in a defeat. His previous highest individual score in an IPL defeat was 88 which he scored during the 2010 season game while playing against his current team Kings XI Punjab. Gayle was representing Kolkata Knight Riders back then. The unbeaten 99 is one of the top ten scores in the IPL for Gayle but the only one came on the losing cause.
A date to remember for AB de Villiers:
The last two instances of AB de Villiers batting against the Kings XI Punjab were on April 13th; both while chasing a total. In 2018, RCB were in hunt of a 156-run target in their home ground. On Saturday, they were behind a target of 174 to register their win. In 2018, RCB were needing 47 from the last five overs while this time around it was 48 runs. The South African top-scored with 57 in the 2018 game, while this time, he scored an unbeaten 59 and stood out as the Player of the Match.
