The second of Saturday’s doubleheader between Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the PCA Stadium in Mohali was another exciting one. Eventually, it was Virat Kohli’s men, who won by eight wickets. Most importantly, it was RCB’s maiden victory of this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL). Meanwhile, KXIP lost their maiden game of this edition at home.

Gayle Force plays a blinder

After RCB won the toss and elected to field, the hosts notched 173 for four in their 20 overs. Chris Gayle and KL Rahul started with a stand of 66 runs from 38 balls. Rahul got a couple to the boundary but got out for 18 to Yuzvendra Chahal. Two overs later, a cracker of a delivery from Chahal accounted for Mayank Agarwal’s wicket. Sarfaraz Khan also got out after promising with 15 with one four and a six.

Nevertheless, Gayle kept on peppering the boundary. He was severe on Mohammed Siraj and smacked him for 24 runs in his first over. The Jamaican reached his half-century in 28 balls. Though he slowed down a wee bit in the middle, the experienced campaigner picked up in the death overs. Unfortunately, the 39-year-old Gayle remained not out on 99 off 64 balls after he hit a four in the last ball off Siraj.

RCB finally gets a victory

RCB didn’t die wondering and started the run chase with absolute intent. Parthiv Patel smacked four boundaries and then fell prey to Ravi Ashwin. Thereafter, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers had the onus of steadying the ship for the visiting team. The duo played shots freely and didn’t get ruffled by the situation. They also didn’t allow the required run-rate to shoot. Kohli got to his fifty in 37 deliveries.

At the half-way mark, RCB went as per the rate. ABD and Virat notched a stand of 85 from 70. Mohammed Shami nipped out Kohli, who scored 67 from 53 with eight fours, to give KXIP a much-needed relief. Andre Tye gave 18 runs in the 18th over and RCB needed 20 off the last 2 overs. Sarfaraz Khan was surprisingly entrusted with the last over and the Challengers won with four balls to spare.
