The happiness of winning their first game didn’t last long for the Royal Challengers Bangalore as they went down to the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday. AB de Villiers’ 51-ball 75 and Moeen Ali’s 32-ball 50 powered the visitors to 171/7 after early wobbles. The MI opening pair added 70 runs in the first seven overs before the spinners started to find some help from the pitch. The home side needed 68 from 58 balls but failed to accelerate. Hardik Pandya finished off the game in the 19th over when he was up against Pawan Negi hitting him for 22 runs.
All the major stats and numbers from Mumbai Indians’ 5th win of the 2019 season:
Yet another win for MI over RCB:
16 – Number of wins for Mumbai Indians against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL; the most by any team in the league against RCB. The Chennai Super Kings have 15 wins against RCB and still have a game to play this season.
Overall, this was MI’s 18th win in the T20 format against RCB; the joint-most for them against an opponent in Twenty20s. MI also has 18 victories in Twenty20 cricket against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Malinga’s experience comes handy:
6 – Number of 4-wicket hauls for Lasith Malinga in the IPL; the 2nd most for any bowler. Sunil Narine leads the chart with seven 4-fers in the league. No other bowler has more than four 4-wicket hauls in the IPL thus far.
13 – The 4/31 in this game by Lasith Malinga is his 13th in the Twenty20 format; the most T20 4-fers for any player. The Sri Lankan pacer surpassed Sunil Narine and Shakib Al Hasan who have 12 four-wicket hauls each in Twenty20s.
ABD @ 200:
203 – AB de Villiers became only the 2nd player to hit 200 sixes in the IPL with his first of the four sixes in this game. Chris Gayle leads the list having hit 315 sixes in the league thus far.
De Villiers gets better off Malinga:
124 – Runs AB de Villiers has scored in the IPL against Lasith Malinga; no other batsman has even scored 100 runs against Malinga. De Villiers scored those 124 runs in only 61 balls with ten fours and eight sixes. In the two matches this season, ABD aggregated 48 runs from 15 balls against the Sri Lankan with six maximums and a four.
A rare all-round double for Moeen:
4 – Moeen Ali became only the 4th player to score a fifty and pick two wickets in the same IPL game for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Jacques Kallis in 2008 against Delhi and Yuvraj Singh in 2014 against RR had also accomplished this double in a defeat.
Chris Gayle had scored 50+ runs and two wickets in the same IPL game twice for RCB. He took 3-fer against KXIP in 2011 after scoring 107 and picked up two wickets in the only over he bowled against PWI after registering the record 175* in 2013. RCB won both the games by huge margins.
