The Delhi Capitals overcame their own demons of imploding in crunch moments of a run chase. They were in a spot of bother yet again in their most recent game against the Kings XI Punjab. Chasing 163 for the win, DC almost messed up yet again. Much to their relief, their skipper Shreyas Iyer kept his calm and stayed unbeaten to see his side home, even though the batters around him crumbled in clusters. With the win, DC have extended their dominating run in this season of the IPL.

In the match, the DC skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to field first. His side struck gold early on in the match by dismissing KL Rahul cheaply. A couple of more wickets fell and the hopes of KXIP were pinned on Chris Gayle. Gayle did not disappoint either and was fluent in his quick 37-ball 69. He found good support from Mandeep Singh (30) and debutante Harpreet Brar (20*) as KXIP finished with a decent 163/7 on the board.

In the run chase, DC lost Prithvi Shaw early but found a stable combination in Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer. Earlier, it was Dhawan who anchored the innings. Once he was dismissed, Iyer was happy to take charge. Both batsmen scored their individual fifties as DC looked in firm command of the chase. A brief scare towards the end of the innings beckoned when the Capitals looked like imploding yet again, but they managed to sail over the line with 5 wickets in hand.

Here are the DC Player Ratings for the match:

Shikhar Dhawan – 8.5/10

Shikhar Dhawan played yet another sensible knock at the top order for the Capitals. With an inexperienced bunch of batters around him, Dhawan had to ensure that he stayed on for a major part of the run chase. He did the same and did it in fine fashion. He notched up his 35th IPL fifty, and his third this season. He scored 56 off just 41 balls with 7 fours and a six to his name.

Prithvi Shaw – 2/10

Prithvi Shaw’s poor run of form with the bat continued in this game as well. As has been the case for him in almost every game in recent times, he showed promise with a couple of flamboyant shots. But soon, he ended up throwing his wicket away. In this match though, he was unfortunate to have gotten run out after scoring 13 off 11 deliveries.

Shreyas Iyer – 9/10

The shaky fortunes of the Delhi Capitals in the run chases this season is a known story to all. Things would have been on a similar unwanted line for them in this game as well had there not been a certain Shreyas Iyer. The young skipper showed great composure to stick to the basics and stayed at one end in the run chase. He notched up a well-deserved fifty and finished with an unbeaten 58 to his name. His knock came off 49 deliveries with 5 fours and a six.

Rishabh Pant – 2/10

Rishabh Pant has been guilty of throwing his wicket away on numerous occasions. This game became just another addition to this list. With the run chase being in complete control of DC, all Pant needed to do was to stay at the crease and the job would have been done with ease. But he went for a wild heave and ended up getting out with just 6 to his name.

Colin Ingram – 5/10

Colin Ingram made a comeback to the playing eleven in this match. He had missed out on playing the previous two games for DC owing to his personal commitments. In this game, Ingram played a lovely little cameo of 19 runs of 9 balls. His contribution was very vital in the context of the run chase.

Sherfane Rutherford – 5/10

Sherfane Rutherford made his IPL debut in this match. Rutherford is a hard-hitting batter who is known for his six hitting ability. He did not get an opportunity to show his skills with the bat in this game. He played only a couple of balls and scored as many number of runs. With the ball, he bowled just one over and conceded 5 runs. He did a fair bit of job on debut.

Axar Patel – 7/10

Axar Patel had a good game with the ball. He picked up a couple of key wickets of the KXIP middle-order. He sent David Miller packing early in the innings, and then came back into the bowling attack to take the wicket of Mandeep Singh. He bowled three overs and returned with figures of 2/22. With the bat in hand, he could only score 1 before getting run out in a controversial event.

Kagiso Rabada – 8/10

Kagiso Rabada has been consistently performing well for the Capitals this season. Yet again, he proved to be the best bowler for his side. With the new ball in hand, he managed to take the wicket of Mayank Agarwal. In the death overs, with the older ball, he accounted for the wicket of R Ashwin. He was very economical in his spell of four overs that finished with numbers of 2/23.

Amit Mishra – 3/10

Amit Mishra had a forgetful outing with the ball in the match. The DC spinners were charged by the Gayle storm. Mishra and Lamichhane were taken to bonkers by the Big Jamaican. While Lamichhane managed to save some pride by picking up wickets, Mishra failed to pick any. He conceded 41 runs in his quota of four overs and looked off colour.

Sandeep Lamichhane – 7/10

Nepalese leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane had a mixed bag outing in this game. KL Rahul and Chris Gayle took the attack to Lamichhane in the power play. He was gutsy to stick to his plans and that yielded great results. He dismissed both the players and also managed to dismiss Sam Curran later in the game. The wickets of Curran and Gayle came in space of five deliveries. Sandeep wrapped up with figures of 3/40 in his four overs.

Ishant Sharma – 4/10

Ishant Sharma’s second coming in the IPL has been quite impressive. A lot of credit for this goes to the DC think tank for using the perfect times to bowl Ishant in. Ishant has been magnificent with the new ball and he had yet another economical outing in this match. Although he did not bag a wicket, he conceded only 29 runs in his four overs.
