The Delhi Capitals (DC) have had a decent outing in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). They are placed third in the points table with five victories from nine matches. The team, captained by Shreyas Iyer, didn’t have the greatest of seasons last time around after finishing as the cellar dwellers but is one of the front-runners to make a place for itself in the subsequent round of this year’s tournament.
However, in their previous match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi, the franchise slumped to a 40-run defeat and their Net Run Rate also took a toll. Their bowlers did a decent job and then their openers gave them a quick start. To their disappointment, the rest of the batting couldn’t provide any resistance and hence, wickets started going down like ninepins.
Nevertheless, all’s not lost for the Delhi team as it next faces the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at home itself. Coincidentally, Punjab are locked with Delhi on five victories from nine games. In fact, on a head-to-head count in Delhi, both teams are level on five wins each and the game is expected to be an absolute cracker.
Iyer and Co wouldn’t want to lose back-to-back encounters on their home ground. However, the hosts would need to be wary of one player in the opponent, who has the potential to turn games on its head single-handedly and that’s none other than Chris Gayle, who has an excellent record against Delhi.
Record against the opposition (DC):
13 innings, 381 runs, 38.1 average, 149.41 S/R, one century, 1 fifty
Record at the venue (Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi):
T20 format – 6 innings, 298 runs, 74.5 average, 163.73 S/R, one century, one fifty.
6 T20 innings at this venue – 48, 62*, 4, 128*, 26, 30
In IPL 2019 – 30, 99*, 63, 16, 5, 40, 20, 79
He costs 10.5 credits in the batsmen category and is picked by 89% of teams.
