Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) managed to string together their third victory in succession to stay alive in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). They managed to beat the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 17 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. As far as Ravichandran Ashwin’s men are concerned, they now need to pull their socks up and win three of their remaining four encounters.

ABD weaves his magic

Bangalore blazed away to a massive score of 202 for four in 20 overs after being put in to bat first. Parthiv Patel and Virat Kohli put on 35 runs for the opening wicket in a mere 19 balls. Mohammed Shami nipped out Kohli to break the stand. Parthiv looked ominous for a 24-ball 43 before falling to the guile and the trajectory of Murugan Ashwin. Moeen Ali was cleaned up with a ball from Ravi Ashwin that kept low.

In the ninth over, Hardus Viljoen got rid of Akshdeep Nath. Having lost early wickets, RCB found themselves on the backfoot, however, AB de Villiers and Marcus Stoinis put on a stand of 121 runs off 66 deliveries. De Villiers went at a run-a-ball for the first 25 balls but pressed the accelerator to end his knock on 82 from 44 balls with three boundaries and seven sixes. Stoinis contributed with a 34-ball 46.

RCB clinch their third consecutive victory

KXIP commenced their run-chase on a positive note courtesy of a partnership of 42 runs off a mere 20 balls. Umesh Yadav removed Gayle, who was going bonkers, having scored 23 off 10 balls. Thereafter, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal carried on with the good work and added 59 runs following which the latter got out on 35 from 21 with five fours and a six. The onus was then on David Miller and Nicholas Pooran.

The duo cobbled together a stand of 68 runs. Even as Pooran found the boundary without much fuss, Miller couldn’t quite find his timing. He could only get 24 in 25 balls before being nipped out by Navdeep Saini. After his dismissal, Mandeep Singh came in when Punjab required 30 runs off 11 balls.

Saini also accounted for the wicket of Pooran, who got 46 runs from 28 balls with one four and five sixes. In the last over, Punjab required 27 runs and Ashwin started it with a six off Umesh Yadav but got out in the very next ball. Yadav picked up Hardus Viljoen to end KXIP’s chance of a victory.
