The stage was all set in Chennai for the showdown between the top two sides of the season thus far – Delhi Capitals and the Chennai Super Kings. The contest promised to be an exciting one but ended up turning in to a one-sided affair. The hosts stamped their authority on the league yet again and beat the Capitals convincingly in the match. Chasing a target of 179, the Delhi Capitals could never really get past the CSK spinners in the run chase.

Earlier in the game, DC had a phenomenal start in the match. They won the toss and opted to field first. CSK could only score 3 runs in their first three overs and 27 runs in the powerplay. While the overseas players of the CSK camp struggled to get going, it was Suresh Raina’s free-flowing 59 that brought them back in the game. Later, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja tonked the DC bowlers in the death overs to regain momentum and help their side post 179/4 in 20 overs.

In the run chase, DC could never get a move on. No batter showed resilience and the wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Barring skipper Shreyas Iyer, no other batter could cross the 20-run mark. CSK spinners accounted for 8 wickets among themselves as the visitors bundled out for just 99. Chennai Super Kings won by 80 runs.

Here are the CSK Player Ratings for the match:

Shane Watson – 1/10

Shane Watson had struck some serious form a match ago and things looked bright for CSK with their veteran star coming back to form. But this match proved to be a terrible outing for the Aussie. Watson struggled big time and could not open his account despite having played 9 deliveries. He perished with a duck to his name.

Faf du Plessis – 4/10

Faf du Plessis had a tough time trying to adapt to the conditions in this game. He played out a lot of deliveries, took his own time, but could not get going at his fluent best. The wicket in Chennai was a typical Indian wicket where the ball just did not come on to the bat, and it came as no surprise to see the overseas players struggling to score runs. Du Plessis, however, managed to stay on the crease for long and held the fort at one end. He scored 39 off 41 deliveries with 2 fours and 2 sixes to his name.

Suresh Raina – 8.5/10

With just 3 runs on the board in the first three overs of the match, CSK were indeed struggling. Also, the fact that Faf du Plessis was finding it tough to get going proved to be a setback for the Men in Yellow. They needed someone to step up and accelerate. Suresh Raina did it with ease. He proved it yet again why he is revered in this tournament. He hit a brilliant 59 off just 37 balls on a track that was not the easiest to bat on. Raina hit 8 boundaries and a six during his stay at the crease.

Ambati Rayudu – 3/10

Ambati Rayudu did not have a big role to play in this game. Unlike the previous games where he batted in the top order, Rayudu came in to bat at number 6 in this game. He faced a couple of deliveries and remained unbeaten on 5 with a powerful strike to his name. He would hope for better opportunities in the final league fixture.

MS Dhoni – 9.5/10

MS Dhoni was an absolute superstar in the game. He showed why he is the key to CSK’s success. He found himself at the crease in the final overs of the CSK innings, his preferred time of play. He was in sensational hitting form and carved out 2 sixes and a four in the final over of the innings bowled by Trent Boult. Dhoni remained unbeaten on 44 off 22 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes to his name. Later in the game, he inflicted two near-impossible stumpings to prove why he is the fastest keeper in world cricket.

Ravindra Jadeja – 9.5/10

Ravindra Jadeja had an excellent outing in Chennai. He was promoted ahead of the likes of Ambati Rayudu, Dwayne Bravo, and Kedar Jadhav. He was sent in as a pinch hitter and he did his task well enough. During his 10-ball stay at the crease, he scored 25 with 2 fours and 2 sixes to his name. Later in the game, he bowled a highly economical spell to pick up 3/9 in 3 overs. Well, to be honest, two of his wickets have to be credited to MS Dhoni’s brilliance behind the stumps.

Kedar Jadhav – Not Assigned

Kedar Jadhav did not get a chance to bat in this game, neither was he used with the ball.

Dwayne Bravo – 3/10

Dwayne Bravo had a decent game, but not with a lasting impression. He did not get a chance to bat in the match. With the ball in hand, he got to bowl 3 overs, in which he conceded 18 runs. He failed to pick up any wicket. His best moment in the game was when he caught Rishabh Pant on the boundary ropes to show his dance moves in the celebration that followed.

Harbhajan Singh – 7/10

Harbhajan Singh played the same role that he has been playing for CSK in this season of the tournament – bowl in the power play. The veteran off-spinner bowled with the new ball and was largely successful. After being hit for an odd boundary, he struck back by rattling the stumps of Shikhar Dhawan. Harbhajan finished with 1/28 to his name in his quota of four overs.

Deepak Chahar – 5/10

Deepak Chahar has been a success story for the Men in Yellow this season. The pace bowler has been bowling excellent spells first up with the new ball. He had a great start yet again as he managed to dismiss Prithvi Shaw in the very first over of the DC run chase. In his third over, he was taken away for 15 runs, which spoiled his figures. He finished with 1/32 in the three overs that he bowled on the day.

Imran Tahir – 9/10

Imran Tahir is surely catching up on Kagiso Rabada in the race to get the Purple Cap. Tahir scalped 4 wickets in this game to inch closer to Rabada’s tally on 25 wickets this season. He was the pick of the bowlers for CSK with magnificent figures of 4/12 in the 3.2 overs that he bowled. He accounted for the big wicket Rishabh Pant, which proved to be a turning point in the game. The other players he dismissed were Axar Patel, Sherfane Rutherford, and Amit Mishra.
