The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were in dire straits after six consecutive defeats. Nevertheless, Dinesh Karthik & Co. made an incredible comeback with two victories in a row, their last victory coming against the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by seven wickets in Mohali. Their triumph came with two overs to spare. For KXIP a lot of permutation and combination need to go in their favour for a playoffs berth.

Curran makes KKR pay

After losing the toss and being put in to bat first, Punjab made a rather sedate start, having scored 41 runs in the powerplay. Meanwhile, the hosts lost the wickets of both their openers- Chris Gayle and KL Rahul. Sandeep Warrier picked up the crucial scalps to give KKR the early advantage. Mayank Agarwal looked ominous with a knock of 36 runs from 26 deliveries after which he was unluckily run out.

Nicholas Pooran was in no mood to die wondering and he raced away to 48 off 27. Nitish Rana got rid of him. Mandeep Singh didn’t disappoint either with a 17-ball 25. However, the most impactful knock came off Sam Curran’s bat. When he was on 17, Rinku Singh dropped him and the English all-rounder went berserk to propel Punjab to 183 with a 24-ball 55. In the last over, he smacked Harry Gurney for as many as 22 runs.

Gill plays a delightful knock

The Knight Riders made a delightful start to their run-chase as Shubman Gill and Chris Lynn put on a stand of 62 runs in six overs. Lynn threw his bat at everything and got 46 runs off 22 balls with five fours and three sixes. Andrew Tye nipped out the Queenslander to give KXIP their first breakthrough. Robin Uthappa found the boundary a few times to score a 14-ball 22 after which Ravi Ashwin dismissed him.

At the other end, Gill showed sheer class and accomplished back-to-back fifties off 36 balls. Andre Russell rode his luck to a 14-ball 24 with two fours and as many sixes. Agarwal dropped him once at long off, but Mohammed Shami pinned him soon after. In the last five overs, Kolkata needed a mere 34 runs. Gill remained not out on 65 from 49. Dinesh Karthik played a cameo of 21 to see the Knights through to victory.
