In the round-robin stage, Mumbai Indians (MI) was the only team to defeat the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chepauk. Today, Rohit Sharma & Co managed to repeat the same in the all-important Qualifier. This time around, Mumbai thrashed the Super Kings by six wickets to march into the Final and MS Dhoni’s men will now play the second Qualifier against the winner of the Eliminator.

Rayudu and Dhoni steady the ship

The decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired on the Super Kings as they crawled to 131 in 20 overs. Faf du Plessis had a lucky escape but soon fell prey to the leg-spinner Rahul Chahar. Suresh Raina went for an ugly hoick and he became Jayant Yadav’s first victim. Shane Watson hit a couple of fours after which Krunal Pandya dismissed him. Murali Vijay tried to put his head down, scoring a run-a-ball 26.

Chahar accounted for Vijay’s wicket. At that point in time, CSK was straining at 65/4. Thereafter, MS Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu injected some momentum into the innings with an unbeaten stand of 66 runs off 47 balls. Both the batsmen took their time in an attempt to get to a respectable score. Rayudu eventually had a decent knock under his belt, having scored a 37-ball 42 while skipper Dhoni ended on 37 from 29 deliveries.

Surya takes Mumbai home

Mumbai made a horrendous start as Deepak Chahar trapped Rohit Sharma plumb in front. Quinton de Kock promised with a couple of fours. Harbhajan Singh nipped him out after De Kock unsuccessfully tried to clear long off. Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan got the innings back on track with a partnership of 80 runs off 63 balls. The stand took the sting out of the Super Kings’ bowlers.

Yadav went on to notch a half-century off 37 deliveries. Imran Tahir was expensive in his first two overs but picked up Kishan (got 28 off 31) and Krunal Pandya on consecutive balls. The all-rounder perished for a golden duck. The visitors didn’t lose any more wickets and achieved the target with nine balls to spare. Surya remained not out on 71 off 54 balls with 10 boundaries and took his team through.
