The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) wrapped up a couple of weeks ago. It was a one and a half month affair and the teams played 60 matches in the T20 tournament which kept everyone at the edge of their seats. In the round-robin stage, eight teams fought tooth and nail to qualify for the playoffs. The final between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Hyderabad turned out to be a fitting one as well.

Prior to the summit clash in IPL 2019, both the teams had won three championships each. The contest went down to the last over where Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai prevailed and to lift their fourth title. The extravaganza was full of excitement, so much so that Star Network, the official broadcasters, witnessed a 12 per cent increase in the reach from last year as per reports in Inside Sport.

Star broadcast the IPL in eight different languages and it turned out to be a grand success. The viewership on television reached a phenomenal 27.3 million average impressions, thereby setting a growth of 15 per cent. The total reach for the T20 tournament stood at a colossal 462 million.

Records also tumbled as the total consumption increased from 300 billion minutes to 338 billion minutes. The numbers turned out to be the highest ever in the history of the IPL.

Star Sports CEO thanks all stakeholders

“I am delighted that VIVO IPL 2019 was the biggest ever! This year, the strong regional strategy of having four independent dedicated language channels in Tamil, Telugu, Bangla and Kannada, the Select Dugout and Super Funday feed contributed immensely to the increased reach of VIVO IPL,” Gautam Thakar, the CEO of Star Sports, was quoted as saying on Inside Sport.

He also sounded excited about the World Cup, scheduled to get underway on May 30. “The exciting Summer of Cricket on our network began with a spectacular IPL and will continue with the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup. On behalf of the Star Sports Network, I would like to thank all stakeholders who have contributed to make VIVO IPL 2019 a grand success,” he added.

The warm-up matches of the World Cup are currently underway and all ten matches have a broadcast.
