With the victory against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 9 wickets at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Chennai Super Kings have dented the former’s hopes of making it to the playoffs. The Yellow Army won their last three games on the trot and essayed the role of a spoilsport for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and now KXIP.

Winning the toss, MS Dhoni sent KXIP to bat first. For the final league game, CSK made three changes to their line-up. While Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir and Shardul Thakur were included, Mitchell Santner, Karn Sharma, and Shane Watson missed out. KXIP also made two changes as Arshdeep Singh and Glenn Maxwell missed out while Mayank Agarwal and James Neesham grabbed a spot in the playing XI.

Batting first, the Punjab batters floundered after a great start. They were reeling at 44 runs in 5 overs and were hoping to post a mammoth target but Lungi Ngidi bowled a perfect length ball to dismiss Mayank and give CSK their first breakthrough. Agarwal’s wicket initiated a collapse of the batting line-up. What followed was another hiccup for KXIP in the form of skipper KL Rahul while Nicholas Pooran and Chris Gayle soon followed.

Despite the disappointing start, Rahul led franchise managed to put 153 on the board at the loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs on the back of 62 runs off 30 deliveries by right-hander Deepak Hooda. Ngidi was the pick of the bowler for the Super Kings as he took a three-wicket haul while Shardul Thakur, Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja had one each to their name.

Chasing 154 didn’t seem a task for the Yellow Army and they dashed the hopes of the Kings XI with a clinical performance by the top-order batting line-up. The opening pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis didn’t allow the Punjab seamers to settle as they garnered 57 runs in the powerplay.

After that, it was a cakewalk for the three-time champions. Though Chris Jordan managed to take the wicket of Faf, it was too late as he had already played his part by scoring 48 off 34. The in-form Gaikwad smashed his third consecutive half-century in IPL 2020 (62* off 49 deliveries) to take CSK home.
