Defending champions Mumbai Indians, after suffering a five-wicket defeat against Chennai Super Kings in the season opener, locked horns with Kolkata Knight Riders in the fifth match of IPL 2020 at Abu Dhabi. It eventually turned out to be a lopsided contest where MI clinched the victory by 49 runs and opening their tally in the points table.

Dinesh Karthik-led KKR stepped on the field for the first time in this year’s IPL after they put MI to bat first after winning the toss. In pursuit of clinching their first victory in IPL 2020, both MI and KKR were equipped with several match-winners in their artillery. While MI had the likes of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, KKR were stacked with match-winners like Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Shubman Gill.

Aiming to steer MI to a dominant start, skipper Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock opened the innings on a pitch which was expected to dish out a good amount of runs. But De Kock was sent back cheaply to the pavilion by Shivam Mavi in the second over, leaving MI on 8/1.

After De Kock’s departure, skipper Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav made full use of the Powerplay by smacking boundaries all over the park. In the first six overs, MI amassed 59 runs on the board at the loss of a wicket.

The duo kept the scoreboard moving until Suryakumar got run out while striving a second run. The dismissal didn’t affect MI’s run-flow as it was skipper Rohit who rose to the occasion. Known for his impeccable timing and flawless technique, Rohit hit a flurry of boundaries to notch up his half-century in 39 deliveries.

Rohit Sharma slammed 6 sixes in his 80-run knock

In the process, he also reached the milestone of hitting 200 sixes in the IPL. After Rohit’s departure in the 18th over, neither Hardik Pandya nor Kieron Pollard was successful in guiding MI over the 200-run mark. Nevertheless, MI registered a challenging total of 195/5.

In response, Kolkata Knight Riders were struck with two blows in the Powerplay itself as their two openers– Shubman Gill and Sunil Narine– were shown the exit door. Both the batsmen fell prey to short ball deliveries. Post the openers’ exit, skipper Karthik and Nitish Rana manoeuvred the run-flow with singles and occasional boundaries.

With Karthik-Rana duo in the middle, the possibility of a successful run-chase wasn’t looking vague for the men with gold helmets. But the partnership was eventually broken by Rahul Chahar, who trapped Karthik in the front. Rana also followed Karthik in the next over, leaving the stage open to two fresh batsmen– Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell.

Jasprit Bumrah hit the final nail in the coffin by dismissing both Russell and Morgan in the 16th over, making the victory look impractical for the Knight Riders. In the end, KKR managed to amass just 146 runs on the scoreboard in their stipulated 20 overs.

During the match, Twitter exploded with tweets lauding Rohit’s stellar batting show. Australian quick Pat Cummins was on the radar of meme-makers after he slammed Bumrah for 4 sixes in a single over. Many even compares Cummins’ fireworks with Archer’s sixes against CSK.
