Royal Challengers Bangalore, in pursuit of their maiden IPL trophy, started their campaign on a positive note as they thumped Sunrisers Hyderabad by 10 runs. After gathering 163 runs on the board, RCB cleaned up the Hyderabad side in 19.4 overs.

SRH skipper David Warner, after winning the toss, put RCB to bat first and the world witnessed a new opening pair of Devdutt Padikkal and Aaron Finch making its way into the middle. Padikkal, after an impressive domestic season, proved his worth with the bat as he hit a flurry of boundaries in the Powerplay.

After playing Bhuvneshwar Kumar with caution in the first over, 20-year-old Padikkal justified his selection by smacking boundaries all over the ground The left-hander made an instant impact, slamming his maiden IPL half-century on his RCB debut. Australia’s Aaron Finch, from the other end, kept shuffling the strike along with hitting occasional boundaries.

Virat Kohli’s RCB fly off to a great start

After amassing his maiden IPL half-century, Padikkal failed to convert it into a big score as he departed after getting bowled off a Vijay Shankar delivery. Finch followed him in no time as the Australian was trapped in front by Abhishek Sharma.

Following two setbacks, RCB’s ship was steered by the dependable Kohli-de Villiers duo. Instead of going for big shots, they kept ticking the scoreboard with singles and doubles. Later in the innings, it was ‘Mr 360’ AB de Villiers who stole the show with his quick-fire half-century. Smashing 51 off 30 deliveries, the South African ensured that RCB cruise past 160 on the scoreboard.

In response, SRH had a shaky start as Warner fell prey to an unfortunate run out. Fellow opener Bairstow drilled it down the ground and the ball brushed off pacer Umesh Yadav’s hand before hitting the stumps at non-striker’s end. Warner’s departure, however, didn’t affect SRH’s run-flow. Bairstow and Manish Pandey kept the scoreboard ticking by singles and occasional boundaries.

But the drama was yet to unfold. Kohli’s go-to bowler Yuzvendra Chahal plucked two wickets on two consecutive deliveries, including the prized scalp of Bairstow. The match shifted in RCB’s favour after Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma also departed without leaving an impact. Things got worse for the Orange Army as they shattered like a stack of cards in the death overs. Chahal’s three-wicket haul eventually made the difference and SRH succumbed to the pressure and lost their opening game.

Twitter, in no time, was flooded with memes about the game. It was Vijay Shankar on their radar as they targetted the all-rounder for his woeful performance. Shankar got out on a golden duck and also conceded 14 runs in eight deliveries of his spell. Umesh Yadav was also trolled for his expensive bowling figures. The speedster leaked 48 runs in four overs, emerging as RCB’s worst performer with the ball. Meanwhile, many fans also congratulated Kohli and his troops by kick-starting their IPL 2020 campaign with a triumph.
