When the major auctions took place in 2018, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) decided against retaining Gautam Gambhir. Dinesh Karthik was picked and he was asked to lead the side. KKR did well to reach the playoffs in 2018 but struggled big time earlier this year.

Andre Russell won them a few games single-handedly and that was the only major highlight for them from the 12th season. Dinesh Karthik’s captaincy also was under the scanner. He wasn’t able to use his resources efficiently. Senior players didn’t really stand up and hence, KKR failed to qualify for the playoffs. Hence, given the way the last season panned out, we may well see a change in captaincy in KKR.

The coaching staff has already been shuffled and thus, Dinesh Karthik may be asked to step aside. There are limited options in the squad but investing in someone like Shubman Gill at the helm may be a long-term option. Robin Uthappa was the vice-captain last season but he’s had a terrible season as well. Thus, KKR might go for a big player in the auction and we may see a new skipper in 2020.
