The next edition of the Indian Premier League is still seven months away but its already starting to garner the headlines. The IPL Auction 2020 will be staged on December 19 in Kolkata. It is the first time that Kolkata will hosts the coveted auctions.

It is also the first time when the Board of Control for Cricket in India [BCCI] has decided to stage the auctions at a different venue, going away from the erstwhile tradition of holding the ceremony in the City of Gardens- Bengaluru.

According to a report published in ESPN Cricinfo, the IPL 2020 auction will be a mini-auction before the franchises disband for a complete overhaul and prepare to assemble fresh squads for the 2021 season. For the uninitiated, the last big IPL auction was held last year in 2018 where franchises were allowed to retain five players before building new squads. The franchises have been intimated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India [BCCI] that the trading window will close by November 15th.

According to the report published, Delhi Capitals have biggest balance of Rs 8.2 Crores, followed by Rajasthan Royals [Rs 7.15 crores], Kolkata Knight Riders [Rs 6.05 crores] followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad [5.3 crores], Kings XI Punjab [Rs3.7 crores], Chennai Super Kings [Rs 3.2 crores], Mumbai Indians [Rs 3.05 crores] and at the bottom of the pile is Virat Kohli‘s Royal Challengers Bangalore with Rs 1.8 crore in the purse.

Additional INR 3 Crore purse for each franchise

The franchises were originally allotted Rs 85 crores [US $12 million approx] to enable them to build their respective teams for the 2020 edition. Every franchise will now have an additional Rs 3 Crore [US $425,000] as a surplus to the balance to their kitties from the last auction.

It will be really interesting to see how the franchises go about their business, as they aim to build a robust squad for the next edition. With the auctions just two months away, the talent scouts will be out which makes each and every T20 game across continents very very crucial both for the players as well as the scouts.

It is expected that many pulled out IPL 2019 players might take part in IPL 2020 as there is the T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in Australia later next year.
