Troubles have been landing in the Chennai Super Kings squad too often these days. Ahead of IPL 2020, the fuss just kicked off when at least 12 members of their contingent tested COVID-19 positive during regular testing. The team members were recovering the trauma when star member of CSK Suresh Raina decided to fly back India, stating ‘personal reasons.’ He has even made himself unavailable for the entire IPL 2020.

In the same light, MS Dhoni and Co. aren’t looking for any replacement for Raina but trying to test skills of youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad. The 23-year old impressed the CSK skipper with his bat during the preparatory camp in Chennai before flying for UAE. It is to be noted that Gaikwad has been undergoing going self-isolation after testing COVID-19 positive along with pacer Deepak Chahar.

The duo can only join the squad after September 10, given they test negative twice. The Super Kings’ management is of the opinion that the young lad can do the job for them in the middle order.

N0 3 position under discussion in CSK lot

“In T20s, most teams employ leg-spinners to trouble the right-handers. But then, a left-hander could negotiate with leggies easily. So the loss of such an established batsman like Raina would hurt CSK. But they have a utility player in Curran and could send the southpaw up the order. He can bat at No. 3 and give CSK those useful runs.

“Over the years, we have also seen Dhoni preferring left-arm pacers. Curran can come in handy since he can swing the ball in the air and is a very enthusiastic fielder,” stated former leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan to TOI.

After Raina’s departure, the no 3-batting position has been left wide open, and the former bowler felt that either Ruturaj or England all-rounder Sam Curran can ply the trade for the Yellow Army. Watson and Ambati Rayudu can take up the opening charge well.

“They have Faf du Plessis too who can play at any position in the top 4. CSK doesn’t need to panic at all with so much experience on their side. All they need is to fine-tune their mental makeup,” the veteran concluded.
